These standard-width rails were initially developed by the Losmandy company for their GEM mounts and have since become a widely adopted standard in the astronomy industry. Manufacturers such as Celestron, AstroPhysics, and Software Bisque (Paramount) have incorporated this design into their products, and today, most manufacturers offer clamps compatible with 3" Losmandy-style rails.
