This flattener is a lens designed to correct the natural field curvature produced by the primary optics of a telescope. Without correction, this curvature can make stars at the edge of the field of view appear less sharp. The field flattener addresses this issue, allowing astrophotographers to capture images where stars remain sharp all the way to the edge of the frame. The flattener is placed between the telescope and the camera.
