Description

Compact, swift, and full-frame, the black V-RAPTOR 8K VV + 6K S35 Dual-Format Camera is a remarkable addition to RED DIGITAL CINEMA's latest DSMC3 platform. Slightly larger than the KOMODO yet featuring an innovative sensor, the V-RAPTOR facilitates multi-format recording in 8K VV, 6K Super35, 4K, 3K Super16, and anamorphic options. This adaptability allows users to tailor their format selection to each project, accommodating a range of professional cine or still photo lenses. The V-RAPTOR's RF lens mount supports various lens adapters, featuring a locking ring for added stability when using heavier lenses and ensuring steady, wide-open capture. Addressing user input, RED has introduced a right-side user interface, placing control conveniently within reach for 1st and 2nd ACs directly at the camera. With dual 12G-SDI outputs, high-resolution capabilities including 16-bit REDCODE Raw at significantly increased frame rates, 1080 streaming, 17+ stops of dynamic range, and phase-detection autofocus (PDAF), the V-RAPTOR is well-suited for diverse production styles.

The integrated 2.4" LCD monitor is designed solely for camera control purposes (without preview video).

New Full-Frame Sensor

At the core of the V-RAPTOR lies a new 35.4MP full-frame sensor, delivering 17+ stops of dynamic range for exceptional low-light performance and boasting the lowest noise floor among the RED lineup. While lacking a global shutter, the V-RAPTOR's rolling shutter with high-speed readout is nearly twice as fast as the MONSTRO, effectively minimizing motion artifacts. This advanced sensor also introduces phase-detection autofocus (PDAF), particularly beneficial for operators capturing fast-paced or unpredictable scenes. Accompanying the new sensor is a fixed OLPF (optical low-pass filter), ensuring the capture of RED's renowned color quality and sensitivity.

Compact Micro-V Batteries

Complementing the V-RAPTOR's compact design, power is supplied through RED and Core SWX-developed Micro-V mount batteries or approved batteries from Anton Bauer, bebob, FXlion, Hawk-Woods, IDX, and SWIT. Measuring under 3" wide, the 98Wh RED Micro-V batteries offer approximately one hour of runtime, with a single battery charging in approximately 2.5 hours and two batteries in 4 hours using the dual charger. Full-size V-mount and Gold-mount adapters will also be available for users seeking longer operating times or utilizing existing battery supplies.

CFexpress Card Capture

Utilizing CFexpress 2.0 Type B cards, V-RAPTOR users can leverage widely available media, although currently only the RED/Angelbird 660GB card is RED approved. This 660GB card will soon be accompanied by a 1.3TB card variant.

Assistant Interface

Featuring a right-side LCD screen user interface, the V-RAPTOR offers on-camera control for 1st and 2nd ACs or operators positioned on that side of the camera. Physical buttons prevent accidental selections common with touchscreens, and customizable user pages enable personalized interface configurations. The interface conveniently displays available resolutions and frame rates based on the chosen format.

Inputs and Outputs

Dual 12G-SDI ports facilitate output to two displays simultaneously, each with or without focus peaking, timecode, or other displays, or with different looks. A USB Type-C port supports video output up to 1080p for streaming or other applications.

High-Speed and REDCODE Options

For slow-motion applications, the V-RAPTOR offers high-speed frame rate options, including 8K 17:9 at 120 fps, 6K S35 at 198 fps, 4K 17:9 at 240 fps, and 2K 2.4:1 up to an impressive 600 fps. REDCODE Raw options have been streamlined to include HQ, MQ, and LQ selections, aligning with popular choices available in RED DSMC2 cameras. Given the 8K sensor's exceptional detail capture, RED recommends MQ or even LQ for most applications, reserving HQ for F/X work. Data rates range from 180 MB/s in LQ to 360 MB/s in HQ, allowing users to plan media usage accordingly.

DSMC3 Form

The DSMC3 form introduces several enhancements over DSMC2 but offers limited compatibility with DSMC2 accessories. For example, the KOMODO Outrigger handle is compatible, but POGO-connector compatibility extends only to the new V-RAPTOR version components. Notable improvements include a larger fan system with two intake valves, enhancing thermal heat exchange (TEC) and enabling operation across a wide ambient temperature range.

DSMC3 Accessories

Upcoming V-RAPTOR accessories, available separately, include a dedicated 7.0 TOUCH monitor, a new expander module, a top plate, a top handle with extension, an Arca-Swiss compatible quick-release baseplate system, side handgrips, cage-type side accessory arms, and a 5-pin to dual XLR audio adapter.
