The Moon Globe – A Historical and Modern Perspective

For centuries, the far side of the moon remained a mystery to humanity. It was only after the Apollo missions that sufficient data became available to create the first complete moon globes. Since the 1970s, the classic Columbus globe has been a staple in schools and households. These globes were traditionally crafted using hollow forms with hand-covered map images.

Recent advancements in lunar exploration, thanks to probes like LRO, Kaguya, and Clementine, have significantly improved the accuracy of moon data. In contrast, earlier moon globes, such as the 1972 version, contained inaccuracies. While maps of the front and back of the moon were available at that time, data for peripheral areas like Mare Marginis, Mare Australe, and Mare Smythii were incomplete. As a result, fantasy landscapes were often drawn in these regions.

Using the latest LRO data, Columbus has now produced an exclusive new moon globe in a limited series. This is likely the most accurate moon globe ever created! Each globe is an exclusive, numbered individual piece with a hand-covered map image. This meticulous process ensures a significantly higher resolution compared to earlier globes produced using deep-draw methods.
