Description
The Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 assembly is a computerized equatorial mount that comes with a GoTo SynScan controller, dual-axis encoders, and a stable tripod. It is a modified version of the well-established HEQ-5 model, based on the larger AZ-EQ6. The AZ-EQ5 offers a lighter and more portable design while maintaining a suitable load capacity of 15kg, making it ideal for advanced astrophotography.
One of the standout features of the AZ-EQ5 is its hybrid motors and the ability to operate in both equatorial and azimuthal modes. It incorporates innovative solutions and enhancements, setting it apart in its price range. The mount features a USB port for connectivity, replacing the previous RS-232 port. It also includes an autoguider port and a port for controlling reflex cameras. Similar to the AZ-EQ6, the AZ-EQ5 allows for the use of two optical tubes simultaneously on both ends of the same axis using an additional saddle.
The AZ-EQ5 offers excellent ergonomics with large and convenient adjustment knobs and screws. Fine adjustments to the polar axis can be made manually with minimal force. Notably, the mount utilizes double encoders to track telescope movements in both axes, independent of the GoTo system. This feature, known as Freedom Find technology, enables manual rotation without the need to reset the GoTo system.
The assembly employs the latest version 4 of the SynScan driver, which provides a comprehensive database of 42,000 objects. GoTo system settings can be configured using three stars, but simpler setups can be achieved with two stars or even a single object such as a planet. The mount allows tracking at stellar, solar, and lunar speeds. Additional improvements can be made using the Periodic Error Correction (PEC) function or Precision Automatic Error (PAE) to enhance object homing precision. A special marker on the RA axis worm wheel enhances the use of the PEC function by precisely determining its position. This marker is stored in the internal memory and can be accessed anytime (also known as PPEC - Permanent Period Error Correction).
The AZ-EQ5 offers convenient polar axis alignment features and includes a built-in USB port for computer control without requiring additional adapters. The included RS-232 cable enables software updates. Additionally, the mount can be paired with an optional GPS module for precise location and time information during observations.
Weighing 14 kilograms, the assembly comes with two 3.5-kilogram counterweights. Optional accessories include a polar scope and a 12V power supply (the standard assembly includes a cable for the cigarette lighter socket).
For any mount equipped with the SynScan GO-TO system, we recommend using an additional GPS module to automate and simplify the setup of geographical coordinates and observation time.
