Description

Prism rails, known as dovetail bars, are primarily utilized for mounting telescopes on astronomical mounts. Additionally, these rails commonly secure additional accessories to the telescope's optical tube, such as an internal focuser or a camera.

In astronomy, two established standards exist: the relatively narrow rails pioneered by Japanese manufacturer Vixen and the wider Losmandy rails, measuring 3 inches in width, primarily intended for supporting heavy optics. In photography, the Arca-Swiss standard is recognized for clamping to camera tripods.

Most astronomical mounts adhere to one of these two standards. Medium-sized mounts and larger often feature a dual mounting saddle capable of accommodating both standards.
