Description
Prism rails, commonly referred to as dovetail bars, are primarily utilized for mounting telescopes onto astronomical mounts. These rails also serve to attach additional accessories to the telescope's lens tube, such as internal expansion joints or cameras.
In the realm of astronomy, two main standards prevail: the narrower rails pioneered by the Japanese manufacturer Vixen, and the wider 3-inch Losmandy rails, which are generally used for heavier optics. Additionally, the Arca-Swiss standard is used within photography for securing equipment to camera tripods.
Most astronomical mounts are tailored to accommodate one of these standards, with medium and larger mounts often featuring dual mounting saddles that can support both types.
