Sloan filters, like KRON and JOHN filters, are designed to isolate and measure specific bands of light emitted by astronomical objects. The key difference between SDSS filters and KRON or JOHN filters is that Sloan filters are non-overlapping and feature steeper transitions between bands.

 

The Sloan bands include U, G, R, I, and Z. Refocusing can be a challenge when switching filters, but Andover minimizes this issue by grinding and polishing all filters to a precisely controlled thickness. These filters are also AR coated to ensure optimal performance and improved imaging quality. Using these filters, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has created a detailed three-dimensional map of the universe.
