Astronomik Filters CLS CCD XT Clip Canon EOS APS-C (54608)

The Astronomik CLS-CCD filter is designed for use under light-polluted skies, particularly with DSLR cameras that have been modified for astronomical purposes. It enhances the contrast between deep-sky objects and the background, making it ideal for astrophotography and observation. Since 2008, Astronomik has shipped redesigned "halo-free" filters to improve performance and eliminate unwanted reflections.

Description

The Astronomik CLS-CCD filter is designed for use under light-polluted skies, particularly with DSLR cameras that have been modified for astronomical purposes. It enhances the contrast between deep-sky objects and the background, making it ideal for astrophotography and observation. Since 2008, Astronomik has shipped redesigned "halo-free" filters to improve performance and eliminate unwanted reflections.

Enhanced Contrast and Light Transmission
This filter improves contrast by blocking emission lines from artificial light sources such as sodium and mercury-vapor streetlights, as well as airglow. Unlike UHC filters, the CLS-CCD filter features a wider transmission curve, allowing more light to pass through while dimming stars less. It is optimized to block spurious light while transmitting useful wavelengths, making it suitable for DSLR, CCD, and black-and-white film photography, as well as deep-sky observations with telescopes or photo lenses with an aperture ratio of f/3 or higher.

Infrared Blocking Layer
The CLS-CCD filter includes an additional IR-blocking layer, enabling its use with DSLR cameras and webcams that lack an integrated IR-block filter. This feature ensures accurate imaging without interference from infrared light.

Compatibility
The clip-filter design is compatible with Canon EF lenses and third-party lenses such as those from Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, and Walimex. However, it cannot be used with Canon EF-S lenses.

Applications
  • Astrophotography: Suitable for DSLR cameras (modified for astronomy), CCD cameras, and black-and-white film photography.
  • Deep-Sky Observation: Enhances the visibility of nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters by reducing the impact of light pollution.
  • Double Star Resolution: Makes resolving double stars easier due to improved contrast.
  • Luminance Channel Imaging: Ideal for creating color images from emission line data in astrophotography.

Technical Specifications
  • Transmission rates:
    • 95% at 486nm (H-beta)
    • 95% at 496nm (OIII)
    • 95% at 501nm (OIII)
    • 97% at 656nm (H-alpha)
  • Wavelength range: Passes light from 450–520nm and from 640–690nm.
  • Build quality: Aluminium mount with a clip-filter frame; filter thickness is 0.3mm.
  • Resistant to humidity, scratches, and aging effects.
The Astronomik CLS-CCD filter is parfocal with other Astronomik filters and diffraction-limited to preserve optical performance. It comes in a durable plastic storage case for long-term protection.
