The Astronomik ProPlanet 742 IR-pass filter is an excellent choice for imaging the Moon and planets, especially Mars, using telescopes with apertures of 6" (150 mm) or larger. By allowing only infrared light with wavelengths above 742 nm to pass, it significantly reduces the effects of atmospheric turbulence ("seeing") that impact visible light imaging. This results in sharper and steadier images, even from less-than-ideal locations.

Description

The Astronomik ProPlanet 742 IR-pass filter is an excellent choice for imaging the Moon and planets, especially Mars, using telescopes with apertures of 6" (150 mm) or larger. By allowing only infrared light with wavelengths above 742 nm to pass, it significantly reduces the effects of atmospheric turbulence ("seeing") that impact visible light imaging. This results in sharper and steadier images, even from less-than-ideal locations. Additionally, the filter is effective for daytime photography of celestial objects by darkening the sky background during advanced dawn or daylight.
 
Main Use
 The filter blocks the visible spectrum and transmits light with wavelengths longer than 742 nm. This eliminates the parts of the spectrum most affected by poor seeing, improving the quality of planetary and lunar imaging. The exposure times remain nearly identical to those used in visible light imaging, ensuring ease of use.
 
This filter offers over 96% transmission for wavelengths between 742 nm and 1100 nm while blocking wavelengths from 350 nm to 730 nm. It is parfocal with other Astronomik filters, ensuring compatibility in multi-filter setups. Its durable design resists humidity, scratches, and aging effects, while maintaining diffraction-limited performance to preserve the optical quality of your telescope. This makes it a reliable tool for astrophotography enthusiasts aiming for high-quality results.
