Astronomik ProPlanet 742 IR-Pass Filter

This filter is ideal for imaging the Moon and planets, particularly Mars, using telescopes with apertures of 6" (150 mm) or larger. It allows only infrared light with wavelengths greater than 742 nm to pass, significantly reducing the effects of atmospheric turbulence ("seeing"). This results in sharper and steadier images compared to visible light imaging. Additionally, the filter darkens the sky background during advanced dawn, enabling planetary and lunar photography even in daylight conditions.

Key Features and Usage

  • The filter blocks visible light and transmits infrared wavelengths above 742 nm, rejecting the spectrum most affected by poor seeing conditions. This improves planetary and lunar imaging with nearly identical exposure times as in visible light.
  • Suitable for astrophotography of bright celestial objects like planets, stars, and comets during twilight or daylight.
  • The filter enhances nature photography when used with an MC-modified DSLR by revealing high reflectivity in near-infrared, producing stunning images of flora under blue skies.

Specifications

  • Mount Material: Aluminum.
  • Frame Type: Clip-Filters.
  • Filter Thickness: 1 mm.
  • Transmission Efficiency: Over 95%.
  • Homofocal Design: Yes, compatible with other Astronomik filters.
  • Durability: Resistant to humidity, scratches, and aging effects.

Applications This filter excels in capturing detailed planetary and lunar images under challenging seeing conditions. It is particularly effective for telescopes with apertures of 6" or larger. For very poor seeing and telescopes over 10" (250 mm), the ProPlanet IR 807 may be a better alternative.
