This filter is specifically designed for imaging the Moon and planets, particularly Mars, using telescopes with apertures of 6" (150 mm) or larger. It allows only infrared light with wavelengths greater than 742 nm to pass. In this range, the effects of atmospheric turbulence ("seeing") are significantly reduced compared to visible light, enabling sharper and steadier images. Additionally, the filter darkens the sky background during advanced dawn, making it suitable for planetary and lunar photography even in daylight.

Additionally, the filter darkens the sky background during advanced dawn, making it suitable for planetary and lunar photography even in daylight.

The Astronomik ProPlanet 742 is highly effective for imaging planets like Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars where infrared wavelengths reveal atmospheric details not visible in standard color imaging. It is particularly suited for telescopes with apertures of 6" or larger. For very poor seeing conditions or larger telescopes (10" or more), filters with deeper cut-on wavelengths, such as the ProPlanet IR 807, may be a better choice.
