Astronomik ProPlanet 742 Clip-Filters Sony alpha 7 (67176)
The Astronomik ProPlanet 742 IR-pass filter is an excellent choice for imaging the Moon and planets, especially Mars, using telescopes with apertures of 6" (150 mm) or larger. It allows only infrared light with wavelengths above 742 nm to pass, significantly reducing the effects of atmospheric turbulence ("seeing"). This results in sharper and steadier images than those captured in visible light.

Description
The Astronomik ProPlanet 742 IR-pass filter is an excellent choice for imaging the Moon and planets, especially Mars, using telescopes with apertures of 6" (150 mm) or larger. It allows only infrared light with wavelengths above 742 nm to pass, significantly reducing the effects of atmospheric turbulence ("seeing"). This results in sharper and steadier images than those captured in visible light. Additionally, the filter darkens the sky background during advanced dawn, enabling effective planetary and lunar photography even in daylight.
Key Features and Benefits
- The filter blocks visible light and transmits infrared wavelengths above 742 nm, rejecting the spectrum most affected by poor seeing conditions. This significantly improves image quality without requiring longer exposure times.
- Ideal for astrophotography of bright celestial objects such as planets, stars, and comets during twilight or daylight conditions.
- Parfocal design ensures compatibility with other Astronomik filters without requiring refocusing.
- The filter is resistant to humidity, scratches, and aging effects, ensuring long-term durability.
Specifications
- Material: Aluminum mount.
- Filter Thickness: 1 mm.
- Transmission Efficiency: Over 96% for wavelengths between 742 nm and 1100 nm.
- Blocking Range: Wavelengths from 350 nm to 730 nm are fully suppressed.
- Compatibility: Clip-filter design suitable for Sony Alpha 7/9 cameras.
Applications
The Astronomik ProPlanet 742 is particularly effective for imaging planets like Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars, where infrared wavelengths reveal atmospheric details not visible in standard color imaging. It is best suited for telescopes with apertures of 6" or larger. For very poor seeing conditions or telescopes with apertures of 10" (250 mm) or more, the Astronomik ProPlanet IR 807 may be a better alternative.
