Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope SC 235/2350 CGEM II 925 GoTo (52278)

This Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope features a long focal length combined with a compact optical tube assembly (OTA), making it highly portable and easy to transport. The optical system begins with an aspherically figured Schmidt corrector plate that directs light onto a spherical primary mirror. The light is reflected back to a secondary mirror, which then directs it through a central hole in the primary mirror to the focuser at the bottom of the OTA.

Description

This Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope features a long focal length combined with a compact optical tube assembly (OTA), making it highly portable and easy to transport. The optical system begins with an aspherically figured Schmidt corrector plate that directs light onto a spherical primary mirror. The light is reflected back to a secondary mirror, which then directs it through a central hole in the primary mirror to the focuser at the bottom of the OTA. This closed system prevents air turbulence, ensuring stable and high-quality images, while also protecting the optics from dust. The Schmidt plate is multi-coated to enhance brightness and minimize stray light reflections.

The telescope delivers sharp, high-contrast images, making it ideal for planetary observation. Its Schmidt-Cassegrain design is versatile, suitable for both visual astronomy and astrophotography, with a wide range of optional accessories available. The design also supports occasional terrestrial observations, such as birdwatching at close range. With an aperture ratio of f/10, this telescope is well-suited for astrophotography. The main mirror focusing mechanism includes pre-loaded ball bearings to minimize "mirror shift," ensuring smooth operation and compatibility with various accessories.

Features of the Optics:

  • Long focal length with a short, lightweight aluminum OTA

  • High-quality StarBright XLT multi-coating for enhanced image brightness

  • Closed optical system for dust protection and stable imaging

  • Pre-loaded ball bearings to reduce mirror shift during focusing

CGEM II Mount

The CGEM II mount is an upgraded version of Celestron’s popular CGEM mount, featuring improved ergonomics, dual dovetail compatibility (Losmandy and Vixen standards), a USB port, and a sturdier tripod. It is designed for astrophotography and can support Celestron OTAs up to 11 inches (279mm) in aperture. The mount is also compatible with refractors and medium-sized Newtonian telescopes from other brands.

The dual saddle clamp securely holds telescopes without damaging the dovetail rail. The mount includes All-Star Polar Alignment, allowing alignment using any star without requiring a polar finder or direct visibility of Polaris. With its large database of celestial objects and advanced tracking capabilities, the CGEM II is ideal for astrophotography enthusiasts.

Additional Advantages of the CGEM II:

  • Marked tripod legs for consistent height adjustment

  • All-Star Polar Alignment for easy setup without Polaris visibility

  • Large celestial database including deep-sky objects, double stars, and solar system objects

  • Permanently Programmable Periodic Error Correction (PPEC)

  • Backlit hand controller with USB port for firmware updates and PC connectivity

  • Meridian tracking up to 30° for uninterrupted long-exposure astrophotography

The CGEM II mount sits between Celestron’s AVX and CGX mounts in terms of capacity and performance. It offers an excellent balance of carrying capacity, advanced features, and affordability, making it ideal for experienced astrophotographers.
