Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope SC 279/2800 CGX 1100 GoTo (52297)

Despite the long focal length, the optical tube assembly (OTA) of this telescope is short, making it highly portable and easy to transport. Light first passes through an aspherically figured Schmidt corrector plate, which directs it onto a spherical main mirror. The main mirror reflects the light to a secondary mirror, which then redirects it back through a central hole in the main mirror and into the focuser at the bottom of the OTA.

Description

Despite the long focal length, the optical tube assembly (OTA) of this telescope is short, making it highly portable and easy to transport. Light first passes through an aspherically figured Schmidt corrector plate, which directs it onto a spherical main mirror. The main mirror reflects the light to a secondary mirror, which then redirects it back through a central hole in the main mirror and into the focuser at the bottom of the OTA. This closed system prevents air turbulence, ensuring high-quality images, while also protecting the optics from dust. The Schmidt plate is multi-coated, enhancing brightness and reducing stray light reflections.

This telescope delivers sharp, high-contrast images, making it ideal for planetary observation. Its Schmidt-Cassegrain design is versatile, suitable for both visual observation and astrophotography. The compact design allows for easy orientation and occasional terrestrial use, such as birdwatching. With an aperture ratio of approximately f/10, it supports astrophotography with ease.

The main mirror focusing mechanism offers a wide focus range, accommodating various accessories. Pre-loaded ball bearings reduce "mirror shift," a common issue in simpler designs. High-quality materials like CNC-milled aluminum, cast steel, and stainless steel ensure durability while keeping the weight low, eliminating the need for a heavy mount.

Features of the Optics:

  • Long focal length with a short OTA

  • Lightweight aluminum construction

  • High-quality XLT multi-coating

  • Closed system to prevent dust and turbulence

  • Pre-loaded ball bearings to minimize mirror shift

CGX Equatorial Mount and Tripod

Celestron’s CGX mount represents years of engineering advancements to provide stability, precision, and ease of use for both visual observation and astrophotography.

Mount Features:

  • Sturdy design with reduced vibration and quicker dampening

  • High-torque motors for smooth slewing and tracking under heavy loads

  • Heavy-duty belt-drive system to minimize backlash

  • Spring-loaded brass worm wheel and stainless steel worm gear for reduced friction

  • Internal cabling to prevent snags during operation

  • Home sensors for consistent starting positions

  • Limit sensors to prevent damage during slewing or tracking

  • Adjustable EQ head position for optimal center of gravity

  • Dual-fit dovetail saddle compatible with CG-5/Vixen and CGE/Losmandy systems

Tripod Features:

  • 2" steel legs with height index marks for quick leveling

  • Accessory tray capable of holding eyepieces, smartphones, or other tools

  • Legs can collapse with the tray installed for faster setup and transport

Electronics:
The mount includes NexStar+ hand control with USB connectivity, AUX ports for wireless alignment accessories (sold separately), an autoguider port, and PPEC readiness. It also features an internal real-time clock to save time and location settings.

Software Integration:
The CGX mount is compatible with PlaneWave Instruments’ PWI Telescope Control software. This software provides precise control through PointXP Mount Modelling, which uses multiple reference stars for enhanced accuracy. The Sky Viewer star chart simplifies target location, while the extensive object database includes access to SIMBAD's astronomical catalog.
