Celestron Maksutov telescope MC 180/2700 CGX 700 GoTo (61736)

Maksutov telescopes are compact and ideal for portable use or travel. Their enclosed optics and collimation stability ensure robustness. Despite their compact design, Maksutovs have a long focal length. However, their field of view is narrower compared to achromatic refractors. This makes them excellent for observing the Moon and planets. When equipped with an Amici prism, they are also suitable for nature observation and photography.

Maksutov-Cassegrain vs. Schmidt-Cassegrain
The Maksutov-Cassegrain (Mak) is a catadioptric telescope that combines lenses and mirrors. Light passes through a corrector lens to the primary mirror, then to a spherical secondary mirror, and finally to the eyepiece. This design provides bright, sharp images with minimal chromatic aberration.

The Mak features a reflective "secondary spot" on the inside of the corrector plate instead of a traditional secondary mirror. This eliminates the need for frequent collimation and offers high-contrast views due to the smaller size of the secondary spot. However, the larger, heavier Maksutov corrector plate takes longer to adjust to ambient temperatures compared to Schmidt-Cassegrains of similar aperture.

Unlike Schmidt-Cassegrains, Maksutovs cannot be modified with Hyperstar optics due to their integrated secondary mirror design.

CGX Equatorial Mount and Tripod
The CGX mount is designed for both visual observation and astrophotography, incorporating years of advancements in German Equatorial mount technology.

  • Key Features of the Mount:

    • Sturdier design with quicker dampening time.

    • Improved motors for better torque, slewing, and tracking under heavy loads.

    • Belt-drive system minimizes backlash for smooth operation.

    • Spring-loaded brass worm wheel and stainless steel worm gear reduce friction.

    • Internal cabling prevents snags during remote operation.

    • Home sensors ensure accurate starting positions after power resets.

    • Limit sensors prevent damage by shutting off slewing before reaching hard stops.

    • Adjustable EQ head optimizes center of gravity for enhanced stability.

  • Tripod Enhancements:

    • 2" steel legs with height index marks for easy leveling.

    • Accessory tray accommodates eyepieces, smartphones, or other tools.

    • Collapsible legs with tray installed for faster setup and transport.

  • Electronics:

    • NexStar+ hand control with USB port.

    • AUX ports for wireless operation using StarSense AutoAlign or SkyPortal WiFi Module (sold separately).

    • USB 2.0 port for direct PC connection with included software.

    • Autoguider port and PPEC readiness.

    • Real-Time Clock retains time and location settings.

The CGX mount prioritizes stability, ease of use, and remote operation compatibility while incorporating ergonomic improvements for portability.

Control Software by PlaneWave Instruments
PWI Telescope Control software enhances precision for CGX mounts through features like PointXP Mount Modelling, which uses multiple reference stars to improve alignment accuracy. The Sky Viewer display simplifies target location, while integration with the SIMBAD online database expands object search capabilities.

  • Features:

    • PointXP Mount Modelling accepts numerous reference stars for higher accuracy than traditional hand controls.

    • Developed in partnership with PlaneWave Instruments.

    • Sky Viewer star chart simplifies navigation.

    • Extensive object database includes online resources.

PWI runs on Windows (7/8/10) and supports future updates.
