Description

EdgeHD is the name for Celestron’s “aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.” After over 50 years of success, Celestron has revolutionized the classic Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope design.

EdgeHD telescopes (short for "Edge High Definition") are true astrographs. This optical system delivers distortion-free, sharp images right to the edge of the visual field. Unlike other "coma-free" designs, EdgeHD telescopes correct both coma and field curvature.

Many optical systems marketed as "astrographs" display stars with sharp clarity but along a curved image plane. When photographed using a camera, this curvature results in noticeable image distortions toward the edges, such as increasing star size or "doughnut-shaped" stars. EdgeHD telescopes eliminate these issues, correcting field curvature and coma across the entire image. This improvement significantly enhances resolution and magnitude limits compared to competing optical systems.

The XLT multi-coating further boosts the performance of EdgeHD telescopes compared to similar systems on the market.

The EdgeHD telescopes also feature mechanical and design enhancements:

  • Mirror clamps securely hold the primary mirror in place without applying pressure on optical elements, ensuring stability even during long exposures.

  • Air vents behind the primary mirror allow for rapid cooling while preventing dust entry through a built-in air filter system.

CGX-L Mount Overview
The CGX-L mount is an advanced version of Celestron's CGX GoTo mount. The "L" stands for "Large," as it offers a higher payload capacity and improved features compared to its predecessor.

The payload capacity has been increased from 25 kg to 34 kg, allowing it to carry larger OTAs (optical tube assemblies) along with photographic accessories. Key features include:

  • 144mm worm gears, ensuring smoother operation under heavier loads.

  • 270mm dovetail clamp, providing secure attachment for larger telescopes.

  • Steel tripod legs (70mm width) for enhanced stability.

  • 31.5mm counterweight rod, ideal for handling heavy setups.

Despite its increased capacity, the CGX-L remains portable and suitable for both mobile use and observatories or remote operations.

Key Advantages of the CGX-L:

  • Increased payload capacity with an excellent weight-to-load ratio.

  • Additional AUX ports and an auto-guider connection on the DEC axis for better cable management.

  • Internal hard stops to prevent over-slewing and improve safety during operation.

  • Adjustable EQ head position for optimized center of gravity and support for a wide latitude range (3°–65°).

CGX Equatorial Mount Details
The CGX mount builds on Celestron's German Equatorial Mount (GEM) legacy with modern improvements tailored for astrophotography and advanced observing needs.

Design Enhancements:

  • Sturdier build with quicker dampening time for improved stability.

  • Improved motors offering higher torque, smoother slewing, and better tracking under heavy loads.

  • Belt-driven system minimizing backlash while ensuring smooth motor operation.

  • Internal cabling to prevent snags during slewing or remote operation.

  • Home sensors and limit sensors for precise positioning and safety during operation.

Tripod Features:

  • 2" steel legs with height index marks for quick leveling.

  • Accessory tray capable of holding eyepieces, smartphones, or other tools.

  • Collapsible tripod legs with the accessory tray installed for faster setup and transport.

Electronics:

  • NexStar+ hand control with USB port for easy updates or PC connectivity.

  • Two AUX ports compatible with StarSense AutoAlign and SkyPortal WiFi Module (sold separately).

  • USB 2.0 port for direct PC connection using included software.

PWI Telescope Control Software
Developed in collaboration with PlaneWave Instruments, PWI software unlocks the full potential of Celestron's CGX and CGX-L mounts:

  • PointXP Mount Modeling, which uses multiple reference stars to enhance GoTo accuracy by correcting alignment errors such as device deflection.

  • Extensive object database connected to SIMBAD’s online astronomical catalog for additional targets.

  • Sky Viewer star chart interface for intuitive navigation.

The software is compatible with Windows 7, 8, and 10 operating systems.
