Prism rails, also known as dovetail bars, are primarily used to attach telescopes to astronomical mounts. These rails can also serve as mounting points for additional accessories on the telescope tube, such as a camera or internal expansion joint.
In astronomy, there are two main standards for these rails. The first is the narrower design introduced by Vixen, a Japanese manufacturer. The second is the wider Losmandy standard, which is 3 inches wide and designed for heavier optical equipment. There is also the Arca-Swiss standard, commonly used in photography for clamping equipment to camera tripods.
Most astronomical mounts are compatible with one of these two rail standards. Medium and larger mounts often feature dual mounting saddles that accept both types.
