Description
Prism rails, also known as dovetail bars, are primarily used for mounting telescopes onto astronomical mounts. They are also commonly used to attach additional accessories to the telescope tube, such as an internal expansion joint or a camera.
There are two main standards for these rails in astronomy. The first is the narrow rail standard developed by the Japanese manufacturer Vixen. The second is the wider Losmandy standard, which measures 3 inches across and is typically used for heavier optical equipment. The Arca-Swiss standard, often used in photography for mounting cameras to tripods, is also sometimes found.
Most astronomical mounts are built to fit one of these two standards. Medium and large mounts frequently have dual mounting saddles that accommodate both types.
