The Nikon D850 is designed for creators who need both resolution and speed in a single, reliable DSLR body. It combines outstanding still-image performance with strong video and time-lapse features, making it a true multimedia workhorse. At its core is a newly developed 45.7MP back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor paired with the EXPEED 5 image processor. This combination delivers extremely detailed images, cleaner output in low light, and fast readout for continuous shooting and video work. The sensor does not use an optical low-pass filter, allowing it to capture maximum sharpness and fine detail.

The camera supports continuous shooting at up to 7 fps for as many as 51 consecutive 14-bit lossless compressed RAW files. When used with the optional MB-D18 grip and an EN-EL18a/b battery, this rate increases to 9 fps. Sensitivity ranges from ISO 64–25,600 natively, with expansion from ISO 32 to ISO 102,400 for demanding lighting situations. For video, the D850 records 4K UHD using either the full width of the sensor or a DX crop, and supports 8K time-lapse creation, making it suitable for advanced landscape, studio, and commercial work.

An advanced Multi-CAM 20K autofocus system with 153 phase-detection points, including 99 cross-type sensors, ensures fast and accurate focusing even in difficult light. Combined with powerful processing, this AF module offers excellent subject tracking for action, wildlife, and event photography.

Physically, the D850 features a bright optical pentaprism viewfinder with 0.75x magnification and a wide field of view, giving a clear and natural viewing experience. A 3.2" 2.36m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD enables comfortable shooting from high and low angles and provides intuitive playback and menu navigation. The robust magnesium alloy body is sealed against dust and weather, and the ergonomics are designed for long sessions, aided by an anti-slip grip, joystick control, and illuminated rear buttons for low-light work.

For connectivity, built-in SnapBridge (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi) supports automatic low-resolution image transfer and remote control from a smart device. For even faster wireless workflows, the optional WT-7a Wireless Transmitter can be added.
