Description

The Nikon Z f draws directly from the design of the legendary Nikon FM2, a 35mm film camera released in 1982 and beloved by professionals and enthusiasts for its rugged construction, practical controls, and accessible price. The Z f honours that heritage with a retro-inspired look and tactile controls, while integrating advanced, full-frame mirrorless technology.

Full-frame performance

More than just a beautiful object, the Nikon Z f builds on the performance of the Z 6II and pushes it further. Incorporating innovations from the Z 8 and Z 9, along with new technology, it combines the EXPEED 7 processor with a 24.5MP full-frame sensor and ISO up to 64,000. It is designed to be the most powerful yet accessible Nikon body for photographers who love classic styling.

Advanced autofocus

The Z f features an expanded auto-area AF system that tracks even small subjects across nearly the entire frame. It offers 299 focus points covering approximately 89 × 96% of the image area (compared to 81 points across 80 × 80% on the Z 6II). In custom wide-area AF, the camera provides 77 patterns for stills and 66 for video (compared to 20 and 12 respectively on the Z 9), giving you fine control over where and how focus is applied.

Backlit AF capability

The sensor uses dedicated pixels for autofocus, allowing the AF system to “overexpose” its own data in dark scenes without affecting the actual image exposure. This design enables extremely low-light AF performance, with detection down to –10 EV in photo mode.

World’s first Focus Point VR

The Nikon Z f introduces a new, world-first Vibration Reduction system that concentrates stabilisation around the active focus point. Conventional in-body stabilisation works across the entire frame and tends to be most effective near the centre, providing less compensation at the edges. With Focus Point VR, the Z f improves sharpness at the subject position, even when it is off-centre.
Focus Point VR works only with non-VR NIKKOR Z lenses and only in stills mode.

Subject detection in manual focus

Subject detection now works even when you are using manual focus, particularly useful if you use older lenses with electronic contacts. The camera can automatically move the focus area onto a subject’s eye and instantly zoom in to help you check focus with precision.

Brass dial controls

The Z f features physical dials for exposure compensation, ISO and shutter speed. The shutter release button uses a leaf switch mechanism to deliver a classic mechanical feel. The control dials are made of brass and will naturally develop a patina over time, creating a look and feel unique to each user.

Dedicated monochrome switch

A dedicated switch on the body lets you instantly switch to black and white shooting, without digging through menus. Three monochrome presets—Monochrome, Flat Monochrome and Deep Tone Monochrome—give you creative black and white output straight from the camera.

Pixel shift shooting

Pixel shift uses in-body VR to move the sensor very slightly between exposures while capturing multiple frames. These frames are then combined in software to produce images with up to four times the standard resolution, delivering incredible detail and reduced noise.

Powerful in-body stabilisation

The Nikon Z f provides up to 8 stops of stabilisation through its in-body VR system, even exceeding the performance of the Z 9. This allows for reliable handheld shooting, even at slower shutter speeds and in poor light.

Low-light confidence

With a maximum stills ISO of 64,000 (expandable further), the Z f is ready for difficult lighting conditions. Starlight View mode brightens the live view feed for easier composition and focusing in dark environments.

Portrait-focused controls

The camera includes several built-in tools designed for portrait work:

  • Rich Tone Portrait preserves skin texture and detail while preventing white clipping.

  • Portrait Impression Balance lets you fine-tune skin hue and brightness.

  • Skin Softening smooths skin while maintaining sharpness in eyes and hair.

Flexible vari-angle monitor

A fully vari-angle LCD monitor allows you to orient the screen to almost any position, making it easier to frame shots from high, low, side, or front-facing angles.

Speed and Pre-Release Capture

The Nikon Z f records high-speed bursts at up to 30 fps in JPEG and 14 fps in RAW. With Pre-Release Capture, the camera can buffer and save up to one second of images before the shutter is fully pressed, helping you catch moments that happen just before you react.

Intelligent Auto mode

Using Deep Learning, the Z f’s Auto mode evaluates the scene and automatically sets exposure parameters such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO to match your intent. It can handle moving subjects, night portraits, group shots and more, optimising exposure while maintaining creative control.

Built to go anywhere

The Z f is designed to be robust, durable and reliable, echoing Nikon’s long-standing build quality. The body is made from magnesium alloy with dust and drip resistance similar to the Z 8. Sensor cleaning and protective coatings are comparable to those used on the Z 9. With an operating temperature rating down to 0°C, it is ready to be a dependable companion in a wide range of conditions.

Seven colour options

Alongside the classic all-black finish, the Z f is available in six additional body colours: Indigo Blue, Sunset Orange, Sepia Brown, Moss Green, Bordeaux Red and Stone Grey. This gives you the flexibility to choose a camera that reflects your personal style.

Enhanced touch control

For the first time in a Nikon Z camera, the monitor is divided into nine customisable touch areas. You can assign each area to actions such as moving the focus point, switching between a subject’s eyes, toggling the framing grid, zooming in or out, displaying a virtual horizon, and more. These functions can be accessed simply by tapping the screen, even while your eye remains on the viewfinder.
