The Nikon Z 5 is a full-frame (FX-format) mirrorless camera designed to handle both photography and video with ease. Its 24.3 MP CMOS sensor works together with the EXPEED 6 image processor to deliver a wide ISO range up to 51200, continuous shooting at 4.5 fps, and UHD 4K video recording at 30 fps.

The camera’s imaging performance is complemented by a 273-point hybrid autofocus system that combines phase-detection and contrast-detection. This system offers fast, precise focusing and reliable subject tracking. Face Detection can be used in both stills and video modes, while Eye Detection AF provides particularly accurate focus for portraits of both people and animals.

The Z 5 body is built around a magnesium alloy frame with weather sealing, making it suitable for use in challenging outdoor conditions. A 3.6 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder gives a clear, high-resolution view at eye level, and the 3.2" tilting touchscreen LCD allows easy shooting from high, low, and creative angles. For sharing and remote control, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work with the Nikon SnapBridge app so you can transfer images and videos or operate the camera from your smart device.

24.3 MP FX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 6 processor

The full-frame 24.3 MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 6 processor provide a versatile combination of image quality, sensitivity, and speed. The native ISO range of 100–51200 supports shooting in a wide variety of lighting conditions and can be expanded to ISO 102400 for very low-light scenes. The sensor and processor work together to deliver clean images with smooth color gradations and reduced noise throughout the ISO range.

The EXPEED 6 processor also enables a continuous shooting speed of up to 4.5 fps at full resolution and allows you to capture 8 MP stills while recording video.

The sensor’s design integrates a 273-point hybrid AF system, using both phase-detection and contrast-detection to quickly and accurately acquire focus for photos and movies. Eye Detection AF uses facial recognition to keep focus on a subject’s eyes, and Face Detection works reliably in both stills and video modes for both human and animal subjects.

UHD 4K video recording

The Nikon Z 5 is fully capable of high-quality video recording. It supports UHD 4K (3840 × 2160) video at up to 30 fps and Full HD (1920 × 1080) recording at up to 60 fps. Footage can be saved internally to the camera’s memory cards or sent to an external recorder via the HDMI output.

When recording in UHD 4K, the camera uses a 1.7x crop from the center of the sensor. Full HD recording uses the full width of the sensor. The Z 5 also supports in-camera time-lapse creation, producing a finished UHD 4K time-lapse movie directly from the camera.

Sensor-shift Vibration Reduction

The camera body includes a 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) system that provides up to five stops of image stabilization, regardless of the lens used. When using adapted lenses via the optional FTZ adapter, 3-axis stabilization is available. For video recording, an additional Electronic VR option helps further reduce shake when shooting handheld.

NIKKOR Z 24–200mm f/4–6.3 VR lens

The included NIKKOR Z 24–200mm f/4–6.3 VR lens is designed as an all-in-one solution covering wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, making it suitable for travel, everyday use, and a wide range of subjects. It offers an 8.3x zoom ratio and is built for FX-format Z-mount cameras, but can also be used on DX-format bodies where it provides a 36–300mm equivalent focal length range.

Its optical design includes aspherical and aspherical ED elements to minimize spherical aberrations and distortion, delivering sharp, accurately rendered images. Two extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color fidelity.

ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coatings are applied to reduce reflections, ghosting, and flare, enhancing contrast and clarity, even in strong backlighting. Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light coming from diagonal angles, while ARNEO Coat handles light from vertical directions. A Super Integrated Coating on several elements helps maintain consistent and accurate color.

A stepping motor provides fast, quiet, and smooth autofocus that is well suited to both stills and video. Full-time manual focus override is available, and the internal focusing design keeps the lens length constant and helps achieve quicker focus.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization in the lens provides up to five stops of compensation for camera shake, improving sharpness during handheld shooting. A programmable control ring is set by default to manual focus but can be reassigned to adjust aperture, exposure compensation, or other settings.

An electromagnetic aperture mechanism ensures stable exposure control, especially beneficial when shooting at higher continuous frame rates. The rounded seven-blade diaphragm produces a pleasing out-of-focus background, enhancing bokeh and selective focus effects. The lens barrel is dust- and moisture-resistant, making it suitable for use in less-than-ideal weather.
