Description

The Nikon Z 5 is a compact FX-format (full-frame) mirrorless camera designed to handle both still photography and video work with ease. It features a 24.3 MP CMOS sensor combined with the EXPEED 6 image processor, providing a wide ISO range up to 51200, continuous shooting at up to 4.5 frames per second, and UHD 4K video recording at 30 frames per second.

Its imaging performance is supported by a sophisticated hybrid autofocus system with 273 selectable points. This AF system uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection for fast, accurate focusing and reliable subject tracking. Face Detection works in both stills and video, and Eye Detection AF gives portrait photographers more precise focus on the eyes of both human and animal subjects.

The sensor and processor are housed in a solid yet compact body with a magnesium alloy chassis and weather sealing, making the Z 5 suitable for use in difficult weather conditions. A 3.6-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers a clear, detailed view at eye level, while the 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen LCD with 1.04 million dots makes it easy to shoot from high, low, and creative angles. For convenient sharing and remote control, the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work with the Nikon SnapBridge app to let you transfer images and videos and operate the camera from a mobile device.

24.3 MP FX-format sensor and EXPEED 6 processor

The full-frame 24.3 MP CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 6 processor to deliver high sensitivity, detailed image quality, and responsive performance. The native ISO range of 100–51200 supports shooting in a wide variety of lighting conditions, and can be extended to ISO 102400 for very low-light situations. The combination of the sensor and processor helps produce clean images with smooth color gradients and reduced noise across the ISO range.

In addition to image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor provides a maximum continuous shooting speed of 4.5 fps at full resolution and allows you to capture 8 MP stills while recording video.

The sensor design also integrates a 273-point hybrid autofocus system that uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection points to quickly and accurately lock focus in both photos and video. Eye Detection AF uses facial recognition to keep focus on the subject’s eyes, and Face Detection works in both stills and video modes for both people and animals.

UHD 4K video recording

The Nikon Z 5 is capable of more than just still photography. It records UHD 4K (3840 × 2160) video at up to 30 fps and Full HD (1920 × 1080) video at up to 60 fps. Movies can be recorded internally to SD cards or sent to an external recorder via the HDMI output.

When recording in UHD 4K, the camera uses a 1.7x crop of the central part of the sensor, while Full HD uses the full sensor width. The camera also includes an in-camera time-lapse mode that can produce a finished UHD 4K time-lapse video directly.

Sensor-shift Vibration Reduction

Inside the body is a 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) system, providing up to five stops of stabilization regardless of which lens is attached. When using adapted F-mount lenses via the optional FTZ adapter, 3-axis stabilization is available. For video shooting, an additional Electronic VR mode can be used to further stabilize handheld footage.

Body design and connectivity

  • A 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen LCD with 1.04 million dots offers bright, clear playback and live view, and makes it easier to compose from high or low angles. The touchscreen functionality allows intuitive control over focus, menus, and settings.

  • A 3.69-million-dot electronic viewfinder provides a sharp, comfortable eye-level viewing experience.

  • Dual SD card slots, both supporting UHS-II, offer flexible and high-speed storage for photos and videos.

  • The magnesium alloy body is dust- and weather-resistant, making it suitable for demanding environments and harsh weather.

  • Built-in SnapBridge support enables easy transfer of lower-resolution images and remote camera control. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Wi-Fi allow a connected smart device to trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera for remote shooting.

  • The EN-EL15c rechargeable lithium-ion battery delivers approximately 470 shots per charge, and can be charged in-camera via USB even while the camera is in use. The Z 5 is also compatible with the optional MB-N10 multi-battery power pack for extended shooting time.

Other camera functions

  • Creative Picture Controls include: Dream, Morning, Pop, Sunday, Somber, Dramatic, Silence, Bleached, Melancholic, Pure, Denim, Toy, Sepia, Blue, Red, Pink, Charcoal, Graphite, Binary, and Carbon.

  • Multiple Exposure mode lets you combine several exposures into a single image for creative effects.

  • Focus Shift mode automatically captures up to 300 images in sequence, shifting focus slightly between each frame. These images can then be stacked to create one image with extended depth of field, ideal for macro work and detailed landscapes.

  • Language support includes English, French, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish.

NIKKOR Z 24–50mm f/4–6.3 lens

Included with the Z 5 is the NIKKOR Z 24–50mm f/4–6.3 lens, a compact standard zoom covering wide-angle to normal focal lengths. Its retractable design helps maintain a slim overall profile, making it well suited to everyday and travel use. A stepping motor provides fast, quiet, and precise autofocus, along with full-time manual focus override for both stills and video. A programmable control ring can be customized to adjust various camera or exposure settings such as aperture or exposure compensation.

FTZ Mount Adapter

The FTZ Mount Adapter (when included or purchased separately) allows the use of Nikon F-mount DSLR lenses on Z-mount mirrorless bodies. It supports around 360 different F-mount lenses, and fully maintains autofocus and auto-exposure with more than 90 E-, G-, and D-type lenses. The adapter is made from magnesium alloy, is weather-sealed, and incorporates a 1/4"-20 tripod mount on its base for improved balance when using longer or heavier lenses.
