The Nikon Z 5 is a compact FX-format mirrorless camera designed to perform well for both still images and video. It features a 24.3 MP CMOS sensor working together with the EXPEED 6 image processor, giving it a wide ISO range up to 51200, continuous shooting at up to 4.5 frames per second, and UHD 4K video recording at 30 frames per second.

Its imaging performance is supported by an advanced hybrid autofocus system with 273 selectable points. This AF system combines phase-detection and contrast-detection to deliver fast, accurate focusing and reliable subject tracking. Face Detection is available in both stills and video, and Eye Detection AF gives portrait shooters more precise focus on the eyes of human and animal subjects.

The camera’s internal hardware is housed in a sleek yet durable magnesium alloy body with weather sealing, making it suitable for shooting in challenging conditions. A 3.6-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder provides a detailed, high-resolution view at eye level, while the 3.2" tilting touchscreen LCD with 1.04 million dots supports shooting from high, low, and creative angles. For easy sharing and remote operation, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work with the Nikon SnapBridge app, allowing wireless transfer of photos and videos and remote control from a mobile device.

24.3 MP FX-format sensor and EXPEED 6 processor

The full-frame 24.3 MP FX-format CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 6 image processor to offer a strong balance of sensitivity, fine image detail, and responsive performance. The standard ISO range of 100–51200 covers a wide range of lighting situations and can be extended up to ISO 102400 for very low-light environments. The combination of sensor resolution and size helps produce clean files with smooth color gradations and reduced noise across the sensitivity range.

Beyond image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor also improves overall speed, supporting a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of up to 4.5 fps and enabling 8 MP still frame grabs while recording video.

In addition, the sensor supports a 273-point hybrid AF system, using both phase-detection and contrast-detection for quick and accurate focusing in both stills and video modes. Eye Detection AF uses facial recognition to keep focus on the subject’s eyes, and Face Detection works in stills and video for both people and animals.

UHD 4K video recording

The Nikon Z 5 is designed to handle video as confidently as stills. It supports UHD 4K (3840 × 2160) recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD (1920 × 1080) recording at up to 60 fps. Video files can be saved internally to SD cards or recorded externally via the HDMI output.

When recording in UHD 4K, the camera uses a 1.7x crop from the center of the sensor, while Full HD uses the full sensor area. The Z 5 also includes an in-camera time-lapse function that can produce a finished UHD 4K time-lapse movie directly from the camera.

Sensor-shift Vibration Reduction

The camera body incorporates a 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) system that compensates for up to five stops of camera shake, regardless of which lens is attached. When adapted F-mount lenses are used via the optional FTZ adapter, 3-axis stabilization is available. For video recording, an additional Electronic VR mode can be enabled to further stabilize handheld footage.
