Description

The Nikon Z7 II builds on the strengths of the original Z7, adding more speed, flexibility and processing power while keeping a familiar body design. It uses a 45.7 MP FX-format back-illuminated CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter and dual EXPEED 6 processors, making it ideal for photographers who demand very high detail and image quality.

The sensor delivers a native ISO range that goes as low as ISO 64 for rich, clean images, with excellent performance up to ISO 25,600. With updated processing, the camera now supports continuous shooting at up to 10 fps and has a deeper buffer for fast action. It can record UHD 4K video at up to 60p, including 10-bit output with N-Log or HLG (HDR) to an external recorder. A 493-point on-sensor phase-detection AF system covers most of the frame and now supports Eye-Detection AF in Wide-Area AF and during video, with focusing sensitivity down to −4.5 EV. In-body 5-axis Vibration Reduction further improves sharpness with any mounted lens.

Physically, the Z7 II keeps the comfortable, weather-sealed body of the original Z7 but adds dual card slots: one CFexpress Type B (or XQD) and one SD UHS-II for flexible storage. A 3.6M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.2" 2.1M-dot tilting touchscreen provide versatile viewing and control. Built-in SnapBridge connectivity allows remote shooting, wireless image transfer and convenient firmware updates over the air.

Firmware version 1.10 adds UHD 4K 60p/50p recording, enables raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders and improves eye-detection in Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF.

Second-Generation Z Improvements

Compared with the first Z7, the Z7 II introduces a number of key upgrades while preserving what users liked most about the original:

  • Dual EXPEED 6 image processors increase buffer depth, enable 10 fps continuous shooting and reduce viewfinder blackout.

  • Updated AF adds Eye- and Face-Detection for humans and animals in Wide-Area AF, both for stills and video.

  • Long exposures can be timed in-camera up to 900 seconds (15 minutes), without needing an external remote.

  • Dual card slots (CFexpress Type B/XQD + SD UHS-II) support overflow, backup and separate recording of different file types.

  • USB Type-C allows in-camera charging and continuous power, useful for long sessions or travel.

  • The rotation direction of the focus ring can be reversed to match your preference or legacy habits.

  • External recording supports HDR (HLG) for ready-to-view HDR files, and N-Log for maximum flexibility in post-production.

  • Eligible for an optional ProRes RAW upgrade that enables ProRes RAW output to compatible Atomos recorders, providing 12-bit raw over HDMI and more grading flexibility.

  • SnapBridge connectivity can be used to update firmware wirelessly, removing the need to use a memory card for updates.

  • Creative features include Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Control options, in-camera time-lapse, and Focus Shift shooting for automated focus stacking (up to 300 frames).

  • Compatible with the optional MB-N11 Power Battery Pack for more battery life and better handling, especially in vertical orientation.

45.7 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor and Dual EXPEED 6 Processors

  • 45.7 MP back-illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor delivers very high resolution with excellent low-light performance and fast readout.

  • The BSI design reduces noise at high ISO values and offers clean, smooth results from ISO 64 up to ISO 25,600 (expanded beyond that as needed).

  • No optical low-pass filter is used, so the sensor can resolve maximum detail and sharpness.

  • Two EXPEED 6 processors provide high overall performance, including:

    • Up to 10 fps continuous shooting.

    • Up to 50 consecutive shots at this speed (depending on file settings).

UHD 4K Video Recording

The Z7 II is also designed for serious video work:

  • UHD 4K recording up to 60p, and Full HD 1080p up to 120p for smooth slow-motion playback.

  • Video can be recorded internally to memory cards or externally via HDMI as uncompressed output.

  • N-Log gamma enables flat-looking footage that maximizes dynamic range for grading.

  • HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) records HDR-ready footage suitable for HDR displays.

  • 10-bit output over HDMI delivers higher-quality data for external recorders.

  • Electronic VR (e-VR) helps stabilize handheld video in combination with optical VR.

  • Focus Peaking assists with manual focusing; Zebra patterns help identify overexposed areas.

  • Audio can be recorded with the built-in stereo microphone or via a 3.5 mm input using an external mic. A headphone jack is provided for real-time audio monitoring.

Firmware version 1.10 adds:

  • UHD 4K 60p and 50p recording options.

  • Raw video output support for Blackmagic Design Video Assist.

  • Improved eye-detection performance in Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.

493-Point Phase-Detect AF System

  • 493 phase-detection AF points are integrated on the sensor, covering approximately 90% of the frame both vertically and horizontally.

  • This wide coverage allows fast and accurate focus across almost the entire frame and effective subject tracking to near the edges.

  • For video, a hybrid AF mode automatically switches between phase-detection and contrast-detection for smooth and reliable focusing.

  • NIKKOR Z lenses are designed for quiet, precise AF operation, ideal for both stills and video.

In-Body Vibration Reduction (VR)

  • 5-axis in-body sensor-shift VR compensates for camera shake by up to 5 stops, regardless of which Z-mount lens is attached.

  • When using F-mount lenses via the FTZ adapter, 3-axis stabilization is available, improving sharpness with many legacy lenses.

Body Design and Handling

  • 3.2" 2.1M-dot tilting LCD: bright and detailed, ideal for live view and image review. The touchscreen allows intuitive menu control, touch AF and playback navigation.

  • 3.6M-dot OLED EVF with 0.80× magnification: provides a clear, sharp eye-level view, using NIKKOR optics and a fluorine coating on the eyepiece to resist smudges and make cleaning easier.

  • Top-panel dot-matrix OLED display shows key settings at a glance while using minimal power.

  • Dual card slots:

    • Slot 1: CFexpress Type B / XQD

    • Slot 2: SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II)
Allow options for overflow, backup or separating RAW/JPEG or stills/video.

  • Tough magnesium alloy body with dust and weather sealing for use in challenging conditions.

  • Comfortable deep grip and balanced form factor designed for long shooting sessions, with anti-slip surfaces and a dedicated joystick for fast AF point and menu navigation.

  • SnapBridge connectivity (Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi) allows:

    • Automatic transfer of low-resolution images to a smart device.

    • Remote shooting, including live view on the device.

    • Wireless firmware updates.

Firmware Version 1.30 (10/19/2021) – Selected Changes

  • Portrait Impression Balance added to both Photo Shooting and Movie Shooting menus for fine control of skin tone and portrait rendering.

  • When the monitor is tilted and Image review is set to On, the display remains in shooting view, improving workflow.

  • Aperture lock (Custom Setting f4) is now available when using an FTZ mount adapter.

  • SB-5000 flash-ready light works as expected when triggered via WR-R10 or WR-R11b wireless remotes.

  • Several AF-related issues were fixed, including focus behavior with AF-ON and specific AF activation and release mode combinations.
