Description
The Nikon Z 7II keeps the familiar feel of the original Z 7, but adds more processing power, greater versatility and better performance overall. It features a 45.7 MP FX-format back-illuminated CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 image processors, making it especially appealing to photographers who are obsessed with fine detail and image quality.
The sensor does not use an optical low-pass filter, so it can capture the maximum amount of detail. It supports a native ISO range down to ISO 64, giving rich, clean files with excellent dynamic range. Thanks to the updated processing, the Z 7II offers faster performance, including continuous shooting at up to 10 fps and a deeper buffer for tracking moving subjects. UHD 4K video is supported up to 60p, with the option to record externally in 10-bit using N-Log or HLG (HDR). The sensor’s 493-point phase-detection AF system now supports Eye-Detect AF in Wide-Area AF modes as well as during movie recording, and can focus in low light down to −4.5 EV. A 5-axis in-body Vibration Reduction system further reduces the appearance of camera shake with any attached lens.
To balance these imaging capabilities, the Z 7II keeps its robust, ergonomic body design but adds a dual card slot layout: one CFexpress Type B slot and one SD UHS-II slot for more flexible storage options. A 3.6M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.2" 2.1M-dot tilting touchscreen LCD provide versatile viewing and control. Built-in SnapBridge wireless connectivity allows remote camera control, wireless image sharing to a mobile device and even firmware updates over the air.
Firmware version 1.10 enables UHD 4K recording at 60p and 50p, adds raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist external recorders and improves eye-detection performance in Auto-Area AF and Wide-Area AF modes.
Second-Generation Z Improvements
Nikon refined the original Z 7 platform to create the Z 7II, increasing speed and versatility while preserving the core strengths of the first model:
-
Dual EXPEED 6 processors provide better buffer performance, 10 fps continuous shooting and shorter viewfinder blackout times.
-
Autofocus now includes Eye and Face Detection for both humans and animals in Wide-Area AF mode, for stills and video.
-
Timed long exposures can be set up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without an external remote.
-
Dual memory card slots (one CFexpress Type B and one SD UHS-II) offer flexible storage options such as overflow, backup and separated file saving.
-
USB Type-C supports in-camera battery charging and continuous power for extended shooting sessions.
-
The focus ring rotation direction on lenses can be reversed to match the user’s preference.
-
HDR (HLG) support when recording externally allows HDR-ready files for direct playback, while N-Log remains available for advanced color grading.
-
The camera is eligible for an optional ProRes RAW upgrade, enabling ProRes RAW output to compatible Atomos recorders and uncompressed 12-bit raw over HDMI for more grading flexibility.
-
SnapBridge wireless connectivity can be used to update camera firmware, removing the need for memory card–based updates.
-
Creative tools include Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Control styles and in-camera time-lapse recording, plus Focus Shift shooting for up to 300 frames for focus stacking.
-
Compatible with the optional MB-N11 Power Battery Pack, which extends battery life and improves handling, especially for vertical shooting.
45.7 MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor and Dual EXPEED 6 Processors
A 45.7 MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor delivers very high resolution, excellent low-light performance and fast readout, which benefits continuous shooting, video and time-lapse work:
-
Back-illuminated design produces cleaner images at high ISO settings and smooth, detailed output at low ISO values, from ISO 64 up to a native ISO 25,600.
-
The sensor omits the conventional optical low-pass filter to maximize sharpness and fine detail.
-
Dual EXPEED 6 processors provide fast overall operation, including continuous shooting at up to 10 fps for about 50 frames (depending on settings).
UHD 4K Video Recording
The Z 7II is a capable hybrid camera for both stills and video:
-
UHD 4K (3840 × 2160) recording up to 60p.
-
Full HD 1080p (1920 × 1080) recording up to 120p for smooth slow-motion playback.
-
Video can be recorded internally to the memory cards or output uncompressed via HDMI to an external recorder.
Advanced video tools include:
-
N-Log gamma for flat, high dynamic-range footage suited to color grading.
-
HLG (HDR) recording for HDR-ready output.
-
10-bit video output over HDMI for higher-quality color and tonal fidelity with external recorders.
-
Electronic VR (e-VR) to help stabilize handheld footage.
-
Focus Peaking to assist with precise manual focus.
-
Zebra display to highlight overexposed areas in the frame.
Audio options:
-
Built-in stereo microphone for convenience.
-
3.5 mm microphone input for external mics and better audio control.
-
3.5 mm headphone output for live audio monitoring.
Firmware version 1.10 enables UHD 4K 60p/50p recording, raw video output for Blackmagic Design Video Assist and improved eye-detection AF performance in Auto-Area and Wide-Area AF.
493-Point Phase-Detect AF System
-
493 on-sensor phase-detection AF points cover about 90% of the image area horizontally and vertically.
-
This wide coverage gives fast, accurate focusing and reliable subject tracking almost to the edges of the frame, for stills and video.
-
Hybrid AF in video mode automatically switches between phase-detection and contrast-detection to maintain smooth and stable focus.
-
NIKKOR Z lenses are designed for quiet and precise AF operation, making them especially suitable for video.
In-Body Vibration Reduction
-
5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction compensates for up to approximately 5 stops of camera shake with any Z-mount lens.
-
With adapted F-mount lenses used via the optional FTZ adapter, 3-axis stabilization is available, improving sharpness in many situations.
Body Design and Connectivity
-
3.2" 2.1M-dot tilting touchscreen LCD provides a bright, detailed view for live view and image playback, and supports touch operation for menus, focus and navigation.
-
3.6M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers comfortable eye-level viewing with 0.80× magnification and NIKKOR optics for a sharp, clear image. A fluorine coating on the eyepiece helps keep it clean.
-
Top-panel dot-matrix OLED display shows important camera settings at a glance while consuming very little power.
-
Dual memory card slots:
-
Slot 1: CFexpress Type B / XQD
-
Slot 2: SD/SDHC/SDXC (UHS-II)
Allow flexible storage setups, including overflow recording, mirrored backup and segregated recording of different file types.
-
-
A robust magnesium alloy body is dust- and weather-resistant to support shooting in harsh conditions.
-
The ergonomic grip and overall shape are designed for comfortable use over long periods, with an anti-slip material and a joystick for quick AF point selection and menu navigation.
-
Built-in SnapBridge connectivity (Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi) supports:
-
Seamless transfer of lower-resolution images to a smart device.
-
Remote shooting and live view from a smartphone or tablet.
-
Convenient wireless firmware updates.
