Description
Designed as “the ultimate snap shooter,” the Ricoh GR IV is the latest generation of the GR compact fixed-lens series, known for its excellent image quality, sharp prime lens, and true pocketability. This model introduces a new 25.7MP BSI CMOS sensor, a newly designed 28mm-equivalent lens, improved autofocus and Shake Reduction, significantly more internal memory, a new higher-capacity battery, refined focusing and shooting modes, and an all-new GR WORLD app for wireless control and image sharing.
New 25.7MP BSI CMOS Sensor and GR ENGINE 7
The GR IV features a newly developed imaging system combining:
-
A 25.7MP APS-C CMOS sensor with a back-illuminated (BSI) design for cleaner, lower-noise images.
-
The GR ENGINE 7 image processor, which delivers:
-
Up to one stop better low-light performance compared to the previous generation
-
Faster start-up time of approximately 0.6 seconds
-
Quicker autofocus response and reduced hunting
-
Extended ISO range up to ISO 204800
-
14-bit DNG RAW and JPEG recording, as on previous GR models
-
Faster, More Accurate Autofocus
Autofocus performance is one of the main upgrades in the GR IV:
-
The new GR ENGINE 7 and lighter, redesigned lens make AF faster and more responsive.
-
Focus hunting is significantly reduced, and both face detection and subject tracking have been improved.
-
Low-light AF speed and accuracy are enhanced to match the sensor’s improved low-light image quality.
Autofocus behavior is designed for quick, intuitive shooting:
-
During autofocus, the system can detect faces and eyes, focus on them precisely, and display the in-focus area on the LCD via the AF frame.
-
When multiple faces are present, the camera automatically identifies the main subject and marks it as the primary focus point.
-
The Full Press Snap feature lets you bypass AF entirely by fully pressing the shutter button to instantly focus at a preset distance. This is ideal for street photography and capturing decisive moments without lag.
-
Full Press Snap can also be triggered by simply tapping the rear LCD screen.
5-Axis Shake Reduction – Up to 6 Stops
For more stable handheld shooting, especially in low light, the GR IV features a new 5-axis sensor-shift Shake Reduction system:
-
Compensates for up to 6 stops of camera shake (depending on conditions).
-
Improves on the previous 3-axis system by correcting a wider range of motion.
-
Helps keep images sharp when shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds or in challenging light.
Image Control and Creative Looks
The GR IV includes an extensive Image Control function:
-
12 distinct modes provide preset looks, plus a new Cinema mode (with Yellow or Green tones) for a nostalgic, film-like rendering.
-
Each mode can be customized by adjusting parameters such as saturation, contrast, hue, key (brightness), and grain.
-
Some settings also allow fine-tuning for strength and size, giving you even more control over the final look.
-
Custom settings can be saved and added to the Image Control menu for fast recall.
Advanced Shooting Modes
-
Program Auto Ex: When the camera is set to Program AE, turning the front e-Dial instantly switches to Aperture Priority, while the rear e-Dial instantly switches to Shutter Priority, allowing quick changes to exposure style without leaving P mode.
-
Snap Distance-Priority AE (Sn): A new exposure mode that emphasizes depth of field. You set a Snap distance, and the camera adjusts exposure parameters to prioritize that desired depth-of-field effect.
-
AA Filter Simulation: The sensor is designed without an optical anti-aliasing (AA) filter to maximize sharpness. If moiré or aliasing appears—such as when shooting fine fabrics or repetitive patterns—the Shake Reduction system can simulate an AA filter effect (Off, Low, High) to reduce moiré.
-
Multi-Exposure Mode: Allows in-camera compositing of multiple frames with no set frame limit. Composite modes include Additive, Average, and Bright, suitable for creative overlays and layered images.
-
Metering Choices: Multi-segment, Center-Weighted, Spot, and Highlight-Weighted metering are available. Highlight-Weighted metering prioritizes preserving highlight detail, allowing shadows to go deeper for a moodier look.
-
Video Recording: In addition to still images, the GR IV records Full HD 1080 video at 60p, 30p, or 24p.
New 28mm f/2.8-Equivalent GR Lens
The GR IV maintains the classic GR wide-angle approach with a fixed 28mm-equivalent lens:
-
The 28mm field of view is ideal for street photography, travel, environmental portraits, and everyday shooting.
-
The f/2.8 maximum aperture is bright enough for low-light work and helps keep the camera compact and lightweight.
Lens design updates:
-
All-new optical formula: 7 elements in 5 groups, including aspherical, high refractive (HR), and low-dispersion glass elements.
-
Delivers higher sharpness and resolution across the frame than previous GR lenses.
-
Lens assembly is physically smaller and lighter, contributing to faster AF and quicker deployment from power-on.
Additional lens-related features:
-
Dedicated Macro mode with a close focusing range of approximately 2.4" to 4.7" / 6 to 15 cm for detailed close-ups.
-
Built-in ND filter reduces exposure by two stops, allowing the use of wider apertures or slower shutter speeds in bright light for depth-of-field and motion-blur effects.
-
Digital crop modes simulate 35mm and 50mm angles of view, giving you tighter fields of view without changing lenses.
Body Design and Ergonomics
-
The GR IV refines the classic GR form factor: it is slimmer than its predecessor while retaining a firm, secure grip and a light yet robust magnesium alloy body.
-
The new DB-120 battery (1800 mAh) replaces the previous battery and offers approximately 250 shots per charge (up from about 200 shots).
-
Internal memory is significantly increased to 53 GB, and the memory card slot now uses microSD/microSDHC/microSDXC (UHS-I) media for a slimmer internal layout.
-
A USB-C port supports in-camera charging and file transfer.
-
Controls have been redesigned with improved button and dial layout. The ADJ lever has been replaced with a dial to provide more intuitive and precise control.
Screen and viewing:
-
The rear 3.0" 1.04M-dot touchscreen LCD has an air gapless design to reduce internal reflections and increase outdoor visibility.
-
Outdoor Monitor Setting boosts brightness for strong daylight use.
-
An Auto brightness mode automatically adjusts the monitor brightness based on ambient light.
Wireless Connectivity and GR WORLD App
-
The GR IV supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) plus Bluetooth 5.3 for fast, stable wireless connectivity.
-
The dedicated GR WORLD mobile app (Android and iOS) provides:
-
Wireless image transfer from camera to phone or tablet
-
Remote shutter release
-
Remote control of select camera settings
-
Transfer of location data from the mobile device to the camera for geotagging
-
Optional Accessories
-
GF-2 External Flash: A slim, body-matched flash that mounts on the hot shoe and provides auto flash exposure. Guide number 9.8 ft (ISO 100). Rechargeable via USB-C.
-
BJ-12 Battery Charger: Desktop charger capable of charging two DB-120 batteries simultaneously for more efficient power management.
-
GA-3 Lens Adapter and GW-4 Wide Conversion Lens: Remove the GN-3 Ring Cap to attach the GA-3 adapter, which supports 49mm screw-on filters and the GW-4 Wide Conversion Lens for an even wider field of view.
