26.0MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor

The a6700 uses a 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR processor, a combination first seen in the FX30 Digital Cinema Camera. This system supports 10-bit UHD 4K recording at up to 120 fps, a maximum continuous shooting rate of 11 fps with autofocus and auto exposure, and bursts of up to 59 compressed raw stills. The back-illuminated sensor structure provides higher resolution without sacrificing sensitivity. With an ISO range of 100–32,000 (expandable to 50–102,400 for stills), the camera offers strong low-light performance, minimal noise, and more than 14 stops of dynamic range.

Cinematic UHD 4K Video

In addition to its powerful sensor and processor, the a6700 brings professional-level video tools from Sony’s Cinema Line to everyday creators and aspiring filmmakers.

• Full pixel readout from the 6K sensor produces high-quality UHD 4K video with about 2.4x the data needed for 4K, reducing moiré and aliasing.

• UHD 4K can be recorded at frame rates up to 120p, and Full HD up to 240p, using full 1:1 pixel readout without pixel binning.

• 10-bit 4:2:2 recording is available using advanced XAVC HS and XAVC S-I formats with bitrates up to 600 Mb/s for consistent quality.

• On a 128GB card, you can record more than two hours in 4K 30p, or more than 40 minutes in 4K 60p.

• Slow & Quick (S&Q) mode allows 4K capture at selectable frame rates between 1–120 fps and Full HD between 1–240 fps (depending on format), enabling both slow-motion and fast-motion effects in-camera.

• S-Cinetone provides a distinctive cinematic look with natural mid-tones, pleasing color, and controlled highlights, based on technology from higher-end Cinema Line cameras such as VENICE.

• S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine gamma curves deliver more than 14 stops of dynamic range and make it easier to match footage with other Sony Cinema Line cameras in post-production.

• Creative Looks can be applied directly to the recorded footage to create a specific mood and reduce the need for heavy color grading.

• User LUTs and presets can be used for accurate monitoring or previewing a particular look during shooting. These can be applied to the rear monitor, EVF, or HDMI output.

AI-Powered Autofocus and Image Stabilization

The a6700 uses an AI Processing Unit to enhance autofocus and image stabilization, making handling smoother and results sharper in a wide range of situations. In stills mode, 759 phase-detection points and, in video, 495 phase-detection points cover about 93% of the frame. These are combined with AI-based subject recognition and real-time tracking. Additional autofocus functions include focus bracketing (up to 299 images with stepped focus positions), reliable AF in low light down to EV -3.0, focus breathing compensation, AF assist, focus mapping, and focus peaking while autofocus is active.

Vlog-Friendly AI-Enhanced Framing

The AI Processing Unit also recognizes and tracks subjects in video, automatically adjusting the crop to keep the subject well-framed. This makes complex camera moves much easier. The tracking area in the frame can be customized and the tracking speed and responsiveness can be fine-tuned, all controlled via the touchscreen.

Image Stabilization

The camera features 5-axis sensor-shift optical image stabilization at the pixel level, compensating for five types of camera shake during handheld stills and video shooting. The stabilization algorithm is optimized to detect and correct movement with extremely high precision, down to a single pixel. The AI Processing Unit also improves communication between the camera body and lens, resulting in more stable framing before the shot. This allows you to confidently use a wide range of lenses, including adapted lenses, while minimizing blur from camera shake.

Advanced Image Rendering and File Options

For still photographers, the a6700 offers flexible color and compression options to balance image quality and storage needs. It supports the High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) format in 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 variants, alongside JPEG and raw. Raw can be saved as Compressed or Lossless Compressed. The AI Processing Unit improves exposure results in Auto mode compared with the a6600, with about a 20% increase in reliability according to manufacturer tests. Algorithms are tuned for better skin tones, backlit scenes, and white balance. The same Creative Looks presets available in video are also available for stills, with user-defined variants using eight adjustable parameters. For optimized viewing of still images on compatible monitors and TVs, the a6700 offers a stills-focused Hybrid Log-Gamma mode for accurate dynamic range in 10-bit HEIF.
