Description
The Sony a6700 Mirrorless Camera combines technology from Sony’s Cinema Line, the image quality of the α-series, and advanced AI-based recognition into a compact, lightweight body. It delivers powerful and flexible imaging for serious content creators. With its 26.0MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor, the camera is lighter than its predecessor yet capable of continuous still shooting at up to 11 fps and oversampled UHD 4K video from 6K. It is designed as a versatile all-in-one tool for creatives who shoot both photos and video.
26.0MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor
The a6700’s imaging system is built around a 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR processor, the same combination used in the FX30 Digital Cinema Camera. This setup supports 10-bit UHD 4K recording at up to 120 fps, a maximum continuous still shooting rate of 11 fps with autofocus and auto exposure, and bursts of up to 59 compressed raw images. The back-illuminated sensor architecture increases resolution without sacrificing sensitivity. With an ISO range of 100–32,000, expandable to ISO 50–102,400 for stills, the camera offers strong low-light performance with low noise and more than 14 stops of dynamic range.
Cinematic Video in UHD 4K
Alongside its sensor and processor, the a6700 brings a wide range of professional video features from Sony’s Cinema Line to everyday creators and aspiring filmmakers.
-
Full pixel readout from the 6K sensor produces high-quality UHD 4K video with about 2.4 times the data needed for 4K, helping to reduce moiré and aliasing.
-
UHD 4K video can be recorded at frame rates up to 120p, and Full HD up to 240p, using full 1:1 pixel readout without binning.
-
10-bit 4:2:2 recording is available in advanced XAVC HS and XAVC S-I formats with bitrates up to 600 Mb/s for consistent quality.
-
On a 128GB card, you can record more than two hours in 4K 30p or more than 40 minutes in 4K 60p.
-
Slow & Quick (S&Q) mode lets you record 4K between 1–120 fps and Full HD between 1–240 fps (depending on format), enabling both slow-motion and fast-motion effects in-camera.
-
S-Cinetone offers cinematic color with natural mid-tones, pleasing skin tones, soft colors, and controlled highlights, based on Sony’s Cinema Line cameras such as VENICE.
-
S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine gamma curves provide more than 14 stops of dynamic range and make it easier to grade footage and match with other Sony Cinema Line cameras.
-
Creative Looks can be applied directly to footage while recording, creating a specific mood in-camera and reducing the need for intensive color grading.
-
User LUTs and presets can be loaded for accurate monitoring or previewing a desired look, and applied to the LCD, EVF, or HDMI output.
-
Built-in tools support quick time-lapse setup with control over frame rate, exposure, brightness, and interval settings.
AI-Powered Autofocus and Image Stabilization
The a6700’s dedicated AI Processing Unit significantly enhances both autofocus and image stabilization. In stills mode, 759 phase-detection AF points, and in video mode, 495 phase-detection AF points, cover about 93% of the image area. These are combined with AI-based subject recognition and real-time tracking to maintain focus reliably.
Additional autofocus features include:
-
Focus bracketing with up to 299 images using progressively shifted focus points
-
Reliable AF performance in low light down to EV -3.0
-
Focus breathing compensation
-
Autofocus assist
-
Focus mapping
-
Focus peaking available even while using autofocus
Vlog-Friendly AI-Enhanced Framing
When recording video, the AI Processing Unit recognizes and tracks subjects, automatically cropping and reframing to keep the subject in a prominent position. This makes complex camera work easier and more intuitive. The tracking area within the frame can be customized, and the response speed and sensitivity can be adjusted, all controlled through the touchscreen.
Image Stabilization
The camera features 5-axis optical image stabilization at the sensor level, compensating for five types of camera shake during handheld shooting of both stills and video. The stabilization algorithm is optimized for sub-pixel precision, allowing accurate correction down to a single pixel. The AI Processing Unit also improves communication between the camera body and lens, giving more stable framing even before the shot. This lets users confidently use a wide range of lenses, including adapted lenses, without worrying as much about blur from camera movement.
Advanced Rendering for Stills
For photographers, the a6700 offers flexible color and compression options to balance image quality and storage space:
-
Support for High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) format in 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 variants
-
Choice between Compressed and Lossless Compressed raw formats
The AI Processing Unit improves exposure accuracy in Auto mode, delivering around a 20% increase in reliability compared with the a6600, based on Sony testing. It adjusts processing for skin tones, backlit scenes, and white balance.
Creative Looks presets used in video are also available for stills and can be customized with eight adjustable parameters. For optimal viewing of still photos on compatible displays, the a6700 includes a stills-specific Hybrid Log-Gamma mode that delivers accurate dynamic range in 10-bit HEIF format.
Body Design and Connectivity
-
A front command dial adds an extra level of direct control, letting you adjust key settings quickly with your index finger.
-
USB output with UVC/UAC support allows you to use the camera as a streaming device, with 4K output at 15 or 30 fps and Full HD at 30 or 60 fps via a computer.
-
Built-in 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi works on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands for fast wireless transfer to mobile devices and direct sharing online, via email, or to cloud storage.
-
The camera can connect to Sony’s Creators’ Cloud platform using the Creators app for media sharing, cloud storage, cloud-based editing, and collaboration. The app can also act as a remote control and display battery and storage status.
-
Integrated 3.5 mm headphone and microphone jacks provide greater control over audio during video recording. The Multi Interface Shoe can also act as a digital audio interface for compatible accessories.
-
The XGA Tru-Finder 2.36M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder provides a bright, high-resolution, eye-level view with 1.07x magnification and a 120 fps mode for smoother tracking of moving subjects.
-
The side-opening, vari-angle 3.0" 1.03M-dot LCD touchscreen can be used at high, low, and front-facing angles, ideal for vlogging and self-recording.
-
The camera uses the high-capacity NP-FZ100 rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which provides approximately 570 still shots or about 120 minutes of video per charge when using the LCD.
-
The a6700 can also be powered over USB from a computer or mobile battery, and the USB connection can charge the battery.
-
The robust magnesium alloy body is designed for durability and includes dust and moisture sealing for use in challenging environments.
-
A redesigned grip improves comfort and stability during long shooting sessions and makes it easier to reach key buttons and dials.
Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens
Sleek, Retractable Standard Zoom
The Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is a compact standard zoom lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras. It offers a versatile 24–75mm equivalent focal length range in a retractable body that makes the camera system easier to carry when not in use. Its combination of useful zoom range and small size makes it ideal as a travel or everyday lens.
Form Factor and Optical Design
-
Variable maximum aperture of f/3.5–5.6 helps keep the lens small and lightweight.
-
Retractable design allows the lens to become very compact when powered down.
-
One extra-low dispersion glass element reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing, giving cleaner images with better color accuracy.
-
Four aspherical elements help correct astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
-
A rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth, pleasing bokeh when using shallow depth of field or selective focus.
Power Zoom, Image Stabilization, and Autofocus
-
A built-in Power Zoom mechanism allows smooth and controlled zooming using the switch on the lens or supported camera body controls, which is especially useful for video.
-
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps reduce the effects of camera shake when shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds and can work together with compatible in-body stabilization systems for more effective blur control.
-
Internal focusing supports faster autofocus performance, keeps the lens length fixed while focusing, and enables a minimum focus distance of 9.8" (25 cm), making it useful for close-up subjects.
