The Hassi Messaoud 001 meteorite was discovered on March 11, 2020, near the town of El Borma, Algeria. It originally weighed 75 grams and is classified as a nakhlite. Nakhlites are a group of Martian meteorites, named after the first of their kind, the Nakhla meteorite. These meteorites are eruptive rocks rich in augite, formed from basaltic magma about 1.3 billion years ago, and contain both augite and olivine crystals.
Based on their crystallisation age and crater counts from various regions of Mars, nakhlites are believed to have originated from the Tharsis, Elysium, or Syrtis Major Planum regions of Mars.
Each specimen is unique, and the weight varies within the specified range. The size of each meteorite depends on its weight, and meteorites are usually available in different weight classes. For specific details, please refer to the product name.
