Astronomik Filters CLS Canon EOS XL Clip

For your initial filter, we recommend the Astronomik CLS filter. This filter effectively suppresses both artificial light pollution and natural airglow, providing a dark-sky background. With longer exposure times enabled by this filter, fainter objects become visible while retaining their natural colors.

Description

Here's a guide to help you choose the right filter:

For your initial filter, we recommend the Astronomik CLS filter. This filter effectively suppresses both artificial light pollution and natural airglow, providing a dark-sky background. With longer exposure times enabled by this filter, fainter objects become visible while retaining their natural colors. It's important to note that the simple CLS filter lacks built-in IR-blocking, so if you're using an astro-modified camera, opt for the CLS-CCD filter instead!

In heavily light-polluted areas, the Astronomik UHC filter is an excellent choice. This filter's transmission curve specifically allows light from the H-beta, OIII, H-alpha, and SII lines to pass through, offering superior background suppression compared to the CLS filter. However, it's primarily suitable for gas nebulae, as it filters out star clusters and galaxies.

For more advanced astrophotography, consider filters targeting specific emission lines like OIII, H-alpha, and SII. Available with full widths at half maximum of 6nm or 12nm, these filters enable detailed imaging of faint objects even under extreme light pollution or with a full Moon overhead. Keep in mind that images captured with these narrow emission line filters won't display natural colors.

If you own an astro-modified camera, the Astronomik OWB filter is designed for you. OWB stands for "original white balance," and this filter corrects the color reproduction of a converted camera, allowing it to be used for everyday photography without requiring extensive post-processing.

Please remember: Clip-Filters can generally be used with all camera lenses, including Canon EF lenses and those from third-party manufacturers like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, and Walimex. However, they are not compatible with Canon EF-S lenses.
