Baader Hyperion 36mm, aspheric eyepieces (10804)

Aspherical eyepieces offer a significant optical advantage by correcting edge distortion and multiple imaging errors in one step. In uncorrected systems, light rays near the edge of the field are refracted more toward the center, causing blurriness at the edges. With aspherical correction, clarity is achieved across the entire image field, distortion is minimized, and the eyepiece can be made smaller and lighter without compromising performance.

Description

Aspherical eyepieces offer a significant optical advantage by correcting edge distortion and multiple imaging errors in one step. In uncorrected systems, light rays near the edge of the field are refracted more toward the center, causing blurriness at the edges. With aspherical correction, clarity is achieved across the entire image field, distortion is minimized, and the eyepiece can be made smaller and lighter without compromising performance.

The design of these eyepieces incorporates aspherical lens surfaces, similar to those used in modern camera lenses, ensuring optimal image quality within a compact form. With fewer glass layers and Baader's premium Phantom Group multi-coating, aspherical eyepieces deliver bright, high-contrast images that rival far more expensive wide-angle lenses with spherical optics.

At 72°, the apparent field of view is slightly larger than the human eye's optimal 68°, allowing the entire star field to be viewed simultaneously without requiring eye movement. Unlike overly wide-angle eyepieces (80° or more), which can reduce image brightness and contrast by spreading light over too large a surface, these eyepieces maintain excellent brightness and sharpness. They also avoid causing eye strain or discomfort, which is common with simpler wide-angle designs. The generous eye relief makes them ideal for public observatories or student use, where inexperienced observers can easily find the optimal viewing position.

These eyepieces are also designed for projection photography. The M43 thread on the eyepiece allows direct attachment of DSLR cameras (with or without lenses), CCD cameras, and other imaging devices. A variety of adapter threads and transition rings are available to adjust focus distance for documenting small star fields or planetary objects with high resolution. Additionally, a 2” SC thread on the telescope side secures the eyepiece directly to Schmidt-Cassegrain scopes without requiring extra adapters or zenith mirrors, enabling a larger true visual field compared to traditional 2” wide-angle eyepieces.

The eyepiece includes both 1.25" and 2" receptacles for versatile use.

Baader Phantom Group Coating™
This advanced 7-layer broadband anti-reflection coating ensures extremely low residual reflection. Each type of glass surface in the eyepiece is coated with an optimized layer system tailored for maximum efficiency at night vision sensitivity (around 520 nm in the green spectrum). The coatings are nearly colorless, ensuring minimal light loss and no scattered light interference. Unlike lower-quality coatings that produce strong green reflections (indicating wasted light), Baader's coatings maximize light transmission across the visible spectrum.

If you observe a coated lens (eyepiece or objective) with strong green reflections, it is not Baader Phantom Group coating! Such reflections indicate lower-tech coatings that waste light in the critical spectral range of 500-550 nm.
