The Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 is a computerized hybrid mount equipped with a SynScan GoTo controller, dual-axis drive with encoders, and a stable tripod.

Based on the larger AZ-EQ6 model, the AZ-EQ5 is a major upgrade of the proven HEQ-5. Compared to the AZ-EQ6, it is lighter, more portable, and still offers a payload capacity suitable for advanced astrophotography. Its maximum load capacity is 15 kg. Thanks to innovative design solutions, this is one of the most attractive options in its price range. Key features include special hybrid motors and the ability to operate in both equatorial and alt-azimuth modes.

The AZ-EQ5 includes a USB port (replacing the older RS-232), an autoguider port, and a DSLR control port. In alt-azimuth mode, the counterweight bar can be replaced with an additional saddle for mounting a second telescope. This allows two optical tubes to be used simultaneously on opposite ends of the same axis (Vixen dovetail standard). Ergonomics are improved with large, convenient adjustment knobs that allow easy manual positioning of the polar axis.

Freedom Find System
The mount features a dual-encoder system that tracks movements independently of the drive. This allows the telescope to be moved manually in both axes without losing GoTo alignment.

SynScan Controller
The AZ-EQ5 uses the latest SynScan V5 controller with a database of 42,000 objects. Alignment can be performed using three stars, two stars, or even a single object (e.g., a planet). The mount supports sidereal, solar, and lunar tracking speeds. Additional precision is available with PEC (Periodic Error Correction) and PAE (Pointing Accuracy Enhancement). The R.A. worm gear includes a marker to help optimize PEC use, with permanent PEC storage (PPEC) available.

Polar Alignment and Connectivity
The system includes features for easier polar alignment. The built-in USB port allows direct PC control without adapters. An RS-232 cable is included for firmware updates. SynScan also supports an optional GPS module to provide accurate location and timing.

Weight and Accessories
The mount weighs 14 kg and includes two 3.5 kg counterweights. Optional accessories include a polar scope and a 12V power supply (the standard kit only includes a car cigarette lighter cable).

Recommended Accessory
For any SynScan GoTo mount, an additional GPS module is recommended for automatic and precise setup of coordinates and time.
