Description

The Nikon Z8 brings flagship-level performance into a smaller, lighter body. Built on the same core technology as the Z9, it delivers professional stills and video features in a form factor that’s easier to carry, balance on a gimbal, or use all day at events. It combines a high-resolution stacked sensor, extremely fast processing and advanced autofocus in a body tailored for hybrid creators.

Flagship Sensor and Processing

45.7 MP Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
The Z8 uses the same FX-format 45.7 MP back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor as the Z9. This sensor delivers:

  • High resolution with excellent clarity and fine detail

  • Fast readout to minimize rolling shutter

  • Low noise and strong dynamic range throughout the ISO range

  • Native ISO 64–25,600, expandable from ISO 32–102,400 for flexible low-light performance

The stacked design reduces distortion with fast-moving subjects, while the back-illuminated construction improves performance at higher ISO settings. The resolution and full-frame size also enable internal 8K video recording.

EXPEED 7 Image Processor
The EXPEED 7 engine is around 10× faster than the processor in the Z7 II. Together with the stacked sensor, it provides:

  • Continuous shooting up to 20 fps in RAW

  • 30 fps in full-resolution JPEG

  • 60 fps with 19 MP JPEGs (DX crop)

  • 120 fps with 11 MP JPEGs, all with full AF/AE tracking

Additional performance benefits:

  • Buffering of over 1000 RAW frames in a burst (around 50 seconds at 20 fps, depending on settings)

  • During playback, you can jump directly to the first frame of a burst for faster review

  • Pre-Release Capture records images for up to one second before the shutter is fully pressed, helping you catch split-second moments

  • Electronic shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 s for shooting wide open in bright conditions

  • Greatly reduced rolling-shutter distortion even with very fast action

  • AF calculations performed at up to 120 fps to keep up with high burst rates

  • High Efficiency RAW format maintains image quality similar to uncompressed RAW, but with file sizes about 30% smaller

  • 10-bit HEIF stills are supported for richer color and dynamic range than JPEG at similar file sizes

  • Motion Blend Retouch can create in-camera composites showing a subject’s movement across a single frame

  • Long Exposure display includes a live exposure timer on the rear screen and an EVF dimming function to preserve night vision

Electronic Shutter–Only Design

The Z8 uses only an electronic shutter—no mechanical shutter at all. This design is made possible by the speed of the stacked sensor:

  • Maximum shutter speed of 1/32,000 s

  • Flash sync up to 1/200 s, plus support for high-speed sync

  • Silent shooting with no mechanical shutter noise or wear

  • Optional electronic shutter sound with adjustable volume, useful for feedback in quiet environments

Because there is no mechanical shutter, there is no mechanical shutter shock or mechanical failure risk, and rolling-shutter distortion is greatly reduced.

Enhanced Portrait Tools

The Z8 builds on the sensor’s capabilities with a set of portrait-focused adjustments:

  • Fine, in-camera control of hue and brightness for more accurate skin tones

  • Skin Softening that smooths skin texture for up to three subjects in the frame while keeping eyes and hair crisp

  • More intuitive manual white balance adjustment and improved Auto WB tuned for human subjects

These tools help produce flattering portraits directly in camera, reducing post-processing time.

Fast and Intelligent Autofocus

493-Point Phase-Detection AF
The Z8 uses a 493-point on-sensor phase-detection AF system that covers almost the entire frame. Benefits include:

  • AF readings up to 120 fps for tracking fast action

  • Consistent, accurate focus across the full image area, not just the center

With Starlight mode, the camera can focus down to approximately −9 EV, making it extremely useful for astrophotography, concerts and other very low-light scenes. Backlit AF can intentionally overexpose AF-specific pixels without affecting the actual image exposure, improving focus accuracy in difficult lighting.

The camera also includes:

  • 3D Tracking AF (as seen on Nikon DSLRs and the Z9) for locking onto fast, erratic subjects that move both towards/away and across the frame

  • Three Dynamic-Area AF modes with different area sizes for different subject types

Subject Detection with Deep Learning

Using deep learning and subject-recognition algorithms inherited from the Z9, the Z8 can automatically detect and track a wide range of subjects, including:

  • People

  • Animals (such as dogs and cats)

  • Vehicles and other specific subject categories

With Auto-Area AF, the camera automatically detects and tracks these subjects around the frame. Eye-Detection AF has been refined to more reliably find and track eyes even when they are very small in the frame or moving erratically, and it can be combined with custom Wide-Area AF patterns.

Advanced Video Capabilities

Internal 8K and High-Speed 4K Recording

The Z8 is a true video workhorse, matching the Z9’s core video features:

  • Internal UHD 8K (7680 × 4320) up to 30p, with approximately 2 hours 5 minutes of continuous recording possible under ideal conditions

  • Internal UHD 4K (3840 × 2160) at up to 120p for smooth slow motion

  • Oversampled UHD 4K up to 60p derived from 8K for maximum sharpness and detail

  • Full HD 1080p (1920 × 1080) up to 100/120p

High-resolution frame grabs can be saved in camera from video:

  • Up to 33 MP stills from 8K footage

  • Up to 11 MP stills from 4K footage

12-Bit N-RAW and ProRes RAW

For maximum grading flexibility, the Z8 supports internal 12-bit raw video recording:

  • N-RAW (Nikon’s own raw codec) allows smaller file sizes compared to many other raw formats, along with the creation of MP4 proxy files for faster reviewing and transfer

  • N-RAW recording options include:

    • Up to 8.3K at 60p or 24p

    • 4.1K at up to 120p

    • 5.3K at up to 60p with a 1.5× crop

    • 3.8K at 120p with a 2.3× crop

  • ProRes RAW HQ is also supported internally at up to 4.1K 60p

ProRes and H.265 10-Bit Recording

For workflows that don’t require raw:

  • Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording in ProRes 422 HQ

  • 10-bit H.265 (HEVC) at various 4K settings

  • H.264 8-bit options for broader compatibility and smaller files

For color grading flexibility:

  • 10-bit N-Log profile for maximum dynamic range in post

  • Flat Picture Control as a neutral starting point
