Description

The MAGUS SPH360 phase contrast system includes a set of phase contrast sliders and phase contrast objectives. It is designed for observing transparent, low-contrast specimens that are difficult or impossible to see using brightfield illumination. Because staining procedures can damage or kill living cells, phase contrast microscopy allows living, unstained organisms to be examined in their natural condition. This technique is widely used in medicine, ecology, pharmacology, agriculture, and related fields.

Phase contrast sliders

The phase contrast slider is installed in the condenser slot. Each slider is a plate with circular openings. One open aperture is used for standard brightfield observation, while the remaining apertures contain phase inserts matched to the objectives in use. The system includes two sliders. One slider is designed for use with 10x, 20x, and 40x objectives, while the second slider operates with 4x and 60x objectives. Each insert is clearly marked to correspond to the appropriate objective.

The slider design allows quick and easy switching between brightfield and phase contrast observation. Alignment of the annular diaphragms in the slider with the phase rings in the objectives is performed using a centering telescope supplied with the microscope.

Plan semi-apochromatic phase objectives

Phase contrast objectives include a phase ring located in the exit pupil plane. Compared with standard phase objectives supplied with typical microscope kits, these plan semi-apochromatic objectives provide a higher level of optical correction. Chromatic aberration is corrected for four colors, spherical aberration is corrected for three colors, and field curvature is corrected over 90% of the field of view diameter. As a result, images viewed through the eyepieces or captured with a digital camera are brighter, cleaner, and higher in contrast than those produced by standard plan achromatic objectives.

The 4x, 10x, 20x, and 40x objectives are designed for use with dishes having a bottom thickness of 1.2 mm. The 60x objective features a correction ring. Rotating this ring adjusts the spacing between internal lens elements, allowing the objective to be optimized for dish bottom thicknesses ranging from 0.1 mm to 1.3 mm.

All objectives are designed for infinity-corrected optical systems and have a parfocal distance of 60 mm.

Compatibility

This phase contrast system is compatible with the MAGUS Bio V360 biological inverted microscope.

The package includes a phase contrast slider with centerable rings for 10x, 20x, and 40x objectives, and a separate phase contrast slider with centerable rings for 4x and 60x objectives. It also includes five infinity-corrected plan semi-apochromatic phase objectives: 4x/0.13, 10x/0.30, 20x/0.45, 40x/0.60, and 60x/0.70 with a correction ring for variable dish bottom thickness. All objectives have a parfocal distance of 60 mm.
