Description

The SMZ-171 Stereo Zoom microscope is an enhanced model in Motic’s established SMZ Stereo series, designed to meet the needs of both routine and research environments. This series introduces new materials for ESD compatibility and optimized LED illumination, making it a versatile platform for a wide range of biological and material science applications. The SMZ-171 delivers consistently clear, distortion-free images thanks to its advanced optical performance and expanded accessory options. It is well-suited for biological and medical sample preparation, industrial quality control, and inspection tasks. The Greenough optical system provides a large 6.7:1 zoom range, remaining parfocal at all magnifications. The five-position click-stop mechanism ensures precise and repeatable magnification settings for easy measurements. With a standard working distance of 110 mm, there is ample space for sample viewing and manipulation. The microscope also offers excellent depth of field for convincing three-dimensional images and can easily be converted into a documentation station with the addition of a Moticam camera.

General Specifications

  • Greenough Optical System

  • Achromatic optics with anti-fungus treatment

  • Widefield binocular or trinocular 45º observation tube (light distribution 0:100 right eyetube/trinotube in photo position)

  • Widefield high eyepoint eyepieces, WF 10X/23 with diopter adjustment (+/- 5 dpt)

  • Interpupillary distance: 48-75 mm

  • Zoom ratio: 6.7:1 with 5 clickstops

  • Standard magnification: 7.5X-50X

  • Working distance: 110 mm

Zoom Range

The 6.7:1 zoom ratio allows smooth switching from a macro overview to detailed micro observation, covering a magnification range of 7.5x to 50x. The parfocal design ensures that focus remains constant throughout the zoom range. Auxiliary objectives and eyepieces are available, extending the total magnification range from 2.25X up to 200X.

Auxiliary Objectives

The standard working distance of 110 mm provides enough space for manipulating samples at any magnification. With the lowest zoom setting and 10X eyepieces, the maximum field diameter is 30.7 mm.

Eyepieces

Widefield 10x/23 mm eyepieces follow the high eyepoint principle, making them comfortable for spectacle wearers. Each eyepiece has individual diopter adjustment (+/- 5 dpt), and standard rubber eye guards help minimize stray light. Alternative magnifications and a range of measuring reticules are also available.

3-D Imaging

The Greenough optical system, with completely separated optical paths, produces high-quality, distortion-free 3D images. The system can achieve a maximum resolving power of 460 lp/mm when used with a 2x auxiliary objective.

Working Distance

The standard 110 mm working distance can be extended up to 301 mm with auxiliary objectives. For higher total magnification, objectives less than 1X can be combined with high-magnification eyepieces (up to 20x).

Optical Heads

The SMZ-171 is available in binocular or trinocular versions with a 45° viewing angle, 10X eyepieces, and a built-in 1X objective. The interpupillary distance can be adjusted from 48 mm to 75 mm. For special setups, a 60° binocular head is also available. All optics are anti-fungus treated for use in humid environments.

Modular Configuration

The SMZ-171 supports a modular system, allowing users to choose from classic pole stands (32 mm diameter), new arm stands, or industrial boom stands for larger samples. ESD versions are available for electrostatic-sensitive environments.

Illumination

A wide range of illumination options can be combined with the SMZ-171, including ring lights for shadow-free imaging and cold light sources with light guides for detailed surface visualization.

Digital Documentation

The SMZ-171 can be paired with Moticam digital cameras and software to create a complete documentation and analysis workstation. The trinocular version supports different camera adapters for various chip sizes.

Accessories

  • 360° rotatable gliding stage for smooth multidirectional movement of the sample

  • Attachable x/y-stage with 76 x 54 mm travel range for precise bidirectional movement
