The flattener, often referred to as a field flattener, is a lens that corrects the slight curvature introduced by the primary optics of a telescope. This curvature can cause stars at the edges of the field of view to appear less sharp. By using a flattener, astrophotographers can capture images where stars remain sharp all the way to the edges of the frame. The flattener is installed between the telescope and the camera.
