SMZ-171 Series Overview

The SMZ-171 Stereo Zoom Microscope is an enhanced addition to Motic’s established SMZ Stereo series, featuring improved optics and materials for ESD compatibility. Optimized LED illumination options and a wide range of accessories make this microscope versatile for biological and material science applications. Its high optical performance and flexibility make it suitable for both routine and research tasks, including biological and medical preparations, industrial quality control, and inspection. The Greenough optical system offers a 6.7:1 zoom range, parfocal at all magnifications, and a 5-position click-stop mechanism for precise and repeatable magnification settings. The standard working distance is 110 mm, providing ample space for sample manipulation, while the enhanced depth-of-view ensures clear and convincing 3D images. The SMZ-171 can also be easily adapted for digital documentation by combining it with a Moticam camera.

Zoom Range

The SMZ-171 allows easy transition from macro to micro views with a 6.7:1 zoom ratio, covering a standard magnification range of 7.5x to 50x. The parfocal design eliminates the need for refocusing while zooming. Auxiliary objectives and eyepieces can extend the total magnification range from 2.25X up to 200X.

 

Auxiliary Objectives

With a standard working distance of 110 mm, the SMZ-171 provides enough space for sample manipulation at various magnifications. The maximum field diameter at the lowest zoom setting with 10X eyepieces is 30.7 mm.

 

Eyepieces

The widefield 10x/23 mm eyepieces offer comfort and a full field of view, even for users who wear glasses. Each eyepiece has individual diopter adjustment (+/- 5 dpt), and rubber eye guards minimize stray light. Additional eyepiece magnifications and reticules are available for measurement purposes.

 

Three-Dimensional Imaging

The Greenough Optical System, with completely separated optical paths, delivers impressive, distortion-free 3D images and high resolving power up to 460 lp/mm with a 2x auxiliary objective.

 

Working Distance

The standard working distance is 110 mm, extendable to 301 mm with additional auxiliary objectives. Lower objective magnifications can be compensated for by using higher magnification eyepieces, up to 20x.

 

The SMZ-171 optical heads are available in binocular or trinocular versions with a 45° viewing angle, 10X eyepieces, and a built-in 1X objective. Interpupillary distance can be adjusted from 48 mm to 75 mm. For special setups, a binocular head with a 60° viewing angle is available. All optics are treated to resist fungus, making the microscope suitable for humid environments. The SMZ-171 can be mounted on a variety of stands, including classic pole stands (32 mm diameter) and new arm stands, both available in ESD versions.

 

Modular Configuration

The SMZ-171 offers a modular system to suit different workplace needs. Industrial boom stands can be used for larger samples, increasing flexibility. All stands require separate illumination systems tailored to the sample.

 

Illumination

Proper illumination is essential for stereo microscopy. The SMZ-171 supports a range of illumination options, including ring lights for shadow-free imaging and unidirectional illuminators for detailed surface visualization.

 

Digital Documentation

The SMZ-171 can be combined with Moticam digital cameras for live imaging and documentation. All Motic cameras include software for analysis and documentation. The trinocular version allows for different camera adapters depending on the camera’s chip size.
