Description

The Nikon Z6 II is a fast, versatile full-frame mirrorless camera designed for serious photo and video work. It keeps the proven handling and image quality of the original Z6 while adding more speed, stronger autofocus, improved video options, and a more flexible storage system.

At the heart of the camera is a 24.5 MP back‑illuminated CMOS sensor working together with dual EXPEED 6 processors. This combination delivers a deeper buffer and faster continuous shooting, up to 14 fps with single-point AF or 12 fps with other AF modes. It records UHD 4K video at up to 30p and Full HD up to 120p for smooth slow motion. The wide ISO range (100–51,200, expandable) makes it suitable for a broad range of lighting conditions, while the built‑in 5‑axis sensor‑shift Vibration Reduction helps keep handheld shots sharp.

The on‑sensor 273‑point phase‑detection autofocus system covers about 90% of the frame horizontally and vertically. It supports Eye‑Detect AF in Wide‑Area AF and during video recording, and focuses in low light down to approximately –4.5 EV.

Physically, the Z6 II retains the compact, solid body design of the original but adds a dual card slot configuration: one CFexpress Type B (or XQD) slot and one SD UHS‑II slot for overflow, backup, or separated file storage. A 3.6M‑dot OLED electronic viewfinder and a 3.2" 2.1M‑dot tilting touchscreen LCD provide flexible viewing and control. Built‑in SnapBridge connectivity allows wireless image transfer, remote control from a smart device, and over‑the‑air firmware updates.

Firmware version 1.10 adds UHD 4K 60p and 50p recording, enables raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist recorders, and improves eye‑detection AF performance in Auto‑Area AF and Wide‑Area AF.

Second-Generation Enhancements

Nikon has refined the original Z6 design to deliver more performance and flexibility while keeping everything that made the first model popular.

  • Dual EXPEED 6 processors provide a 14 fps maximum continuous shooting speed, improved buffer depth, and shorter viewfinder blackout.

  • Updated AF adds Eye and Face Detection for humans and animals in Wide‑Area AF, for both stills and video.

  • Timed long exposures can be set up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without requiring an external remote.

  • Dual card slots (one CFexpress Type B and one SD UHS‑II) allow overflow, backup, or separated storage (e.g., RAW to one card and JPEG to another).

  • USB Type‑C supports in‑camera charging and continuous power, ideal for long shooting sessions.

  • Lens focus ring rotation direction can be reversed to match user preference.

  • HDR (HLG) output over HDMI provides HDR‑ready video for compatible displays; N‑Log is also available for flat footage aimed at colour grading.

  • Optional ProRes RAW upgrade allows 12‑bit ProRes RAW output over HDMI to supported Atomos recorders for advanced grading and maximum flexibility.

  • SnapBridge can update camera firmware via a smart device, avoiding card‑based updates.

  • Creative tools include Multiple Exposure, 20 Picture Controls, in‑camera time‑lapse creation, and Focus Shift shooting (up to 300 frames) for focus stacking.

  • Compatible with the optional MB‑N11 Power Battery Pack for extended runtime and improved handling, particularly in vertical orientation.

24.5 MP FX-Format BSI Sensor and Dual EXPEED 6 Processors

The 24.5 MP full‑frame back‑illuminated CMOS sensor is designed for all‑purpose use, combining strong low‑light capability with fast readout speeds for continuous shooting and video work. The BSI design helps produce cleaner images at high ISOs and smooth tonal transitions across the frame. Native sensitivity runs from ISO 100 to 51,200, with expansion available in both directions.

Dual EXPEED 6 processors power the camera’s overall performance, enabling continuous shooting at up to 14 fps for as many as 124 consecutive frames, while keeping operation responsive in both stills and video modes.

UHD 4K Video Recording and Advanced Tools

The Z6 II is built as a hybrid tool for both photographers and filmmakers:

  • UHD 4K recording with full pixel readout at up to 30p.

  • Full HD 1080p recording at up to 120p for detailed slow‑motion playback.

  • Video can be recorded internally to the memory cards or output via HDMI as an uncompressed signal to an external recorder.

Advanced video features include:

  • N‑Log gamma for flat, high‑dynamic‑range footage optimised for grading.

  • HLG (HDR) recording for HDR‑ready output.

  • 10‑bit output over HDMI for increased colour depth when using external recorders.

  • Electronic VR for smoother handheld footage.

  • Focus Peaking to assist precise manual focusing.

  • Zebra patterns to highlight potentially overexposed areas.

Sound can be recorded via the built‑in stereo microphone or a 3.5 mm external mic input, and monitored in real time using the 3.5 mm headphone output.

Firmware version 1.10 enables UHD 4K 60p and 50p recording and raw video output to Blackmagic Design Video Assist, and improves eye‑detection AF performance when using Auto‑Area and Wide‑Area AF.

273-Point Phase-Detect Autofocus System

A grid of 273 phase‑detect AF points is integrated on the sensor, covering around 90% of the frame both vertically and horizontally. This wide coverage supports fast, accurate focusing for stills and video and maintains subject tracking almost to the frame edges.

Hybrid AF for video smoothly switches between phase‑detect and contrast‑detect methods to maintain natural focus transitions. NIKKOR Z lenses are designed for quiet, smooth AF operation, reducing noise in audio recordings.

5-Axis In-Body Vibration Reduction

The Z6 II includes 5‑axis sensor‑shift Vibration Reduction, compensating for up to 5 stops of camera shake with Z‑mount lenses. When using adapted F‑mount lenses via the FTZ adapter, 3‑axis stabilization is still available, giving useful shake reduction for handheld shooting in a wide range of situations.

Body Design and Connectivity

  • 3.2" 2.1M‑dot tilting LCD provides a bright, detailed display for live view and playback, with full touchscreen control for menus, focus selection, and settings adjustment.

  • 3.6M‑dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers 0.8× magnification, high clarity and contrast, and uses NIKKOR optics for a sharp image. A fluorine coating helps keep the eyepiece clean.

  • Top‑panel dot‑matrix OLED status display shows key shooting information at a glance.

  • Dual card slots (CFexpress Type B/XQD and SD UHS‑II) provide flexible storage options, including overflow, backup, or separate storage for stills and video.

  • Magnesium alloy body is dust‑ and weather‑sealed for reliable use in demanding conditions.

  • Deep, comfortable grip and an ergonomic layout support long shooting sessions, with a joystick for quick AF point and setting adjustments.

  • Built‑in Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi‑Fi work with the SnapBridge app to enable remote shooting, live view on a smart device, wireless file transfer, and simplified firmware updates.

Z6 II Firmware Version 1.30 (19 October 2021)

This firmware update adds and refines several functions:

  • Portrait Impression Balance options added to the Photo Shooting Menu and Movie Shooting Menu for more control over skin tone and portrait rendering.

  • When the monitor is tilted and Image Review is set to “On,” the shooting display remains visible for smoother operation.

  • Voice memo can be assigned to the Movie Record button via Custom Setting f2 (Custom controls). During playback, the button can be used to record or play voice memos up to 60 seconds long.

  • Custom Setting f4 (Aperture lock) is now available when using an FTZ mount adapter.

  • The flash‑ready light on SB‑5000 units now illuminates when a WR‑R10 or WR‑R11b is used for wireless remote flash, indicating readiness.

  • Fixes an issue where focus might unintentionally change during continuous shooting when AF‑ON only was set for AF activation and Out‑of‑focus release was enabled, under specific AF and release mode combinations.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24–200mm f/4–6.3 VR Lens

The NIKKOR Z 24–200mm f/4–6.3 VR is a highly versatile 8.3× zoom lens that covers everything from wide‑angle to telephoto, making it an ideal single‑lens solution for travel, everyday photography, and a wide range of subjects. It is designed for full‑frame Z‑mount cameras, but can also be used on DX models, where it provides an equivalent focal length range of approximately 36–300 mm.

The optical design includes multiple aspherical and extra‑low dispersion elements to maintain sharpness and control aberrations throughout the zoom range. Nano Crystal Coat, ARNEO Coat, and Super Integrated Coating reduce flare, ghosting, and reflections, delivering high contrast and accurate colour in both direct and backlit scenes.

Built‑in Vibration Reduction compensates for camera shake by up to about 5 stops, enhancing handheld performance, especially at longer focal lengths. A stepping motor delivers fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus with full‑time manual override, making the lens equally suitable for stills and video. A programmable control ring can be configured for manual focus or other camera settings such as aperture or exposure compensation.

The rounded seven‑blade diaphragm produces pleasing background blur, while the dust‑ and moisture‑resistant construction helps the lens perform reliably outdoors.
