Description

The MAGUS Metal 650 BD Metallurgical Microscope is designed for examining the surfaces of photomasks, integrated circuits, printed circuit boards, and other large, elongated samples. It features an extra-large stage that supports oversized specimens and a highly precise fine-focus system with a 0.7 µm scale value, enabling accurate work at high magnifications. The microscope supports brightfield, darkfield, and polarized light observation methods, making it a practical choice for quality control laboratories, research facilities, and university departments.

Optical system

The microscope is fitted with a trinocular head that includes a dedicated trinocular tube for mounting a digital camera (camera not included). A light/camera selection knob directs the light path to the camera to produce bright, detailed photos and video for display on an external monitor. The left eyepiece tube includes a diopter adjustment ring for fine-tuning focus to the user’s eyesight.

The included BD plan achromatic objectives are specifically optimized for brightfield and darkfield metallurgical work and provide a long working distance. Five objectives are supplied—one in each position of the revolving nosepiece—and any objective can be quickly swapped for an optional alternative if needed. The microscope uses infinity-corrected optics and provides a magnification range of 50× to 800×. The nosepiece is oriented inward so the user can easily see which objective is currently in the optical path.

Illumination system

The reflected-light illumination system is built to deliver sharp detail across all objectives and supported techniques. A 50 W halogen lamp produces bright, even, warm illumination. The microscope supports Köhler illumination adjustment and includes filters for improved color rendering as well as a polarization system with a built-in analyzer and a removable polarizer. The light source, aperture diaphragm, and field diaphragm can be centered for optimal alignment. A dedicated darkfield device is also included as part of the illumination system.

Stage and focusing

A standout feature is the large 280 × 270 mm stage, with a 204 mm travel range along both the X and Y axes, making it well-suited for long or wide samples. Focus is controlled using coaxial coarse and fine focusing knobs that move smoothly and precisely. The fine focus provides exceptional control at high magnification thanks to its 0.7 µm step scale value. Coarse focus includes a lock and tension adjustment to stabilize the image and match user preferences. The focusing knobs are positioned low at the base of the microscope to support a relaxed working posture, allowing the user to keep their hands resting on the table.

Accessories and expandability

To expand capabilities and tailor the microscope to specific tasks, optional accessories are available, including additional eyepieces, long working distance objectives for brightfield and darkfield, calibration slides, and digital cameras.
