A flattener, also known as a field flattener, is a lens designed to correct the slight curvature of the field produced by a telescope's primary optics. Without a flattener, stars at the edge of the field of view can appear less sharp due to this curvature. By installing a flattener between the telescope and the camera, astrophotographers can achieve images where stars remain sharp all the way to the edges of the frame.
