Magus Metal V700 DIC Metallurgical Inverted Microscope (83714)

This microscope is designed for examining the microstructure of metals, alloys, semiconductor materials, and other opaque specimens. Its inverted construction places no limits on the size of the sample, with only the weight restricted to a maximum of 2 kg. Before observation, the specimen must be properly prepared and then placed on the stage with the surface facing downward. The microscope supports three reflected-light contrast techniques: brightfield, simple polarization, and differential interference contrast (DIC).

Description

This microscope is designed for examining the microstructure of metals, alloys, semiconductor materials, and other opaque specimens. Its inverted construction places no limits on the size of the sample, with only the weight restricted to a maximum of 2 kg. Before observation, the specimen must be properly prepared and then placed on the stage with the surface facing downward.

The microscope supports three reflected-light contrast techniques: brightfield, simple polarization, and differential interference contrast (DIC). Brightfield provides a true, magnified representation of the specimen. Simple polarization reduces glare from metallic surfaces and highlights polymers and other foreign inclusions. Differential interference contrast converts height differences into contrast variations, revealing surface topography and giving the specimen a three-dimensional relief appearance.

A trinocular tube and an additional side camera port allow a monitor and digital camera to be connected simultaneously. The microscope is suitable for use in metallurgical, engineering, aerospace, nuclear, and energy industries, as well as in research laboratories and technical universities.

Microscope head

The optical system is infinity-corrected. During assembly, the eyepiece tubes can be rotated by 180 degrees and the eye relief adjusted to suit the user’s height. The trinocular head allows a monitor to be mounted in the vertical tube, while a digital camera is installed in the side port on the microscope body. Light splitting options include 50/50 or 100/0 on the trinocular head and 100/0 or 0/100 on the body.

Revolving nosepiece

A five-position revolving nosepiece is mounted on the stand beneath the stage. It includes a dedicated slot for a DIC slider, which is used when performing differential interference contrast microscopy with 5x, 10x, and 20x objectives.

Objectives

The microscope is equipped with long working distance plan achromatic objectives designed for brightfield, simple polarization, and DIC techniques. For darkfield microscopy, the MAGUS Metal V700 BD can be used as an alternative.

Focusing mechanism

Coaxial coarse and fine focus knobs are positioned on both sides at the base of the microscope, allowing the user to rest their hands on the work surface and maintain a relaxed posture. Focusing is smooth and precise. A coarse focus lock on the right side enables quick repositioning after changing samples, while a tension adjustment ring on the left allows fine control of focusing resistance.

Mechanical stage

Specimen movement is achieved by moving the stage along two perpendicular axes. At the center of the stage is a rotating circular plate with interchangeable apertures of 10 mm, 20 mm, or 30 mm diameter. A specimen holder secures the sample in place during observation.

Light source

The lamphouse contains a 50 W halogen bulb that provides sufficient brightness for observation with objectives ranging from 4x to 100x in brightfield, polarization, and DIC modes. The halogen light source offers a comfortable color temperature suitable for extended work.

Reflected light illumination

The illumination system supports Köhler illumination. Both field and aperture diaphragms are factory-centered and normally require no adjustment, though centering screws are available if needed. The light source itself is centered along three axes. A removable polarizer and analyzer enable polarization microscopy; the polarizer rotates through 360 degrees, while the analyzer remains fixed.

A DIC prism slider is used for differential interference contrast microscopy with 5x, 10x, and 20x objectives. A set of light filters is included to adjust color balance and intensity during observation and photomicrography.

Accessories and expandability

Additional accessories can further enhance the microscope’s capabilities. Extra eyepieces and objectives extend the magnification range, digital cameras allow image output to a monitor or computer, and calibration slides enable precise measurement of specimen features.
